Freezing, reboots, and battery life issues creep up in HTC and Nokia handsets

Windows Phone 8 enjoyed a big launch at the end of October.  Sporting a slick user interface, a growing app catalog, and (finally) premium hardware, it seemed that the Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) mobile operating system was finally growing into a legitimate competitor to Apple, Inc. (AAPL) and Google Inc. (GOOG).

Unfortunately, the first handsets out the gates appear to be having some issues.

Microsoft Support Forums, Nokia Oyj.'s (HEX:NOK1VSupport Forums, and WPCentral's forums have all been inundated with complaints of peculiar behavior creeping into the lineup.

Reportedly Nokia's flagship phone, the colorful Lumia 920 has been experiencing unexpected freezes and reboots.  The phone also appears to be suffering from bad battery life, a problem that has plagued past Lumia devices due to firmware glitches.

Reportedly disabling tap-to-send NFC helps improve the battery life; it's possible that Nokia's firmware is not smart enough to turn of the NFC modem when no devices is present, instead continuously pinging for compatible signals.

HTC Corp.'s (TPE:24988X has not reportedly experienced that battery life woes, but it has been rebooting.  That indicates that the rebooting/freezing problems may trace to deeper stability issues in Windows Phone.

The Lumia 900 did suffer a major software bug during the launch week, losing its data connection.  AT&T Inc. (T) and Nokia responded with a prompt patch, though, which largely fixed the issues.

One can at least hope that when Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd.'s (KSC:005930Ativ S WP8 phone finally lands, that some of these issues will have been ironed out with software patches.

To be fair, Microsoft is not the only one with issues.  In the Froyo era, Google Inc. (GOOG) Android 2.2 update reportedly bricked some handsets.  And more recently Apple suffered serious antenna issues with the iPhone 4 launch, and more issues -- broken maps, a battery life/wallet-draining data bug, and photograph discoloration with the iPhone 5 launch.

Not impressed with Nokia

I was in an AT&T store the other day while my daughter bought a Galaxy III. I spent time comparing the Galaxy III, iPhone 5 and some Nokia running Windows 8. The Nokia was complete crap. It was cheaply built, the screen looked ugly, it was very quirky to use. The phone itself was so annoying, I didn't end up trying out Windows 8.

The Galaxy III rocks but if you're actually saying the Nokia is cheaply built and the screen is ugly then you're full of crap. Seriously, I dismiss your opinion and judgement.

The 920 is ab amazing phone as far as build quality. Quirky I'll give you because it's a very distinctive UI (which I prefer to and find faster and easier than iOS after a week of use). The build quality is great though. The screen's great if not quite as good as the iPhone's, and some might not love the weight, but it feels great in hand and is very solid feeling.

Get the iPhone and the 920 side by side. The 920 has a higher PPI than the iPhone 5's retina, higher resolution, size, and is brighter. In the autumn sunlight at least the difference is even more obvious because of those dual polaraizers Nokia runs (I forget the marketting term...summer beach sunlight should be amazing) Dunno about gammut, to the naked eye I can't tell.

Your claim has no weight at all. Majority of users and reviewers are praising the build quality yet you don't even know what model it was.

You must be mistaken about which phone you were looking at... I've played with my brothers 920, and I have an 822 (which is in many ways the same as the 820), and both are fantastic phones...
