Freezing, reboots, and battery life issues creep up in HTC and Nokia handsets

Windows Phone 8 enjoyed a big launch at the end of October.  Sporting a slick user interface, a growing app catalog, and (finally) premium hardware, it seemed that the Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) mobile operating system was finally growing into a legitimate competitor to Apple, Inc. (AAPL) and Google Inc. (GOOG).

Unfortunately, the first handsets out the gates appear to be having some issues.

Microsoft Support Forums, Nokia Oyj.'s (HEX:NOK1VSupport Forums, and WPCentral's forums have all been inundated with complaints of peculiar behavior creeping into the lineup.

Reportedly Nokia's flagship phone, the colorful Lumia 920 has been experiencing unexpected freezes and reboots.  The phone also appears to be suffering from bad battery life, a problem that has plagued past Lumia devices due to firmware glitches.

Reportedly disabling tap-to-send NFC helps improve the battery life; it's possible that Nokia's firmware is not smart enough to turn of the NFC modem when no devices is present, instead continuously pinging for compatible signals.

HTC Corp.'s (TPE:24988X has not reportedly experienced that battery life woes, but it has been rebooting.  That indicates that the rebooting/freezing problems may trace to deeper stability issues in Windows Phone.

The Lumia 900 did suffer a major software bug during the launch week, losing its data connection.  AT&T Inc. (T) and Nokia responded with a prompt patch, though, which largely fixed the issues.

One can at least hope that when Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd.'s (KSC:005930Ativ S WP8 phone finally lands, that some of these issues will have been ironed out with software patches.

To be fair, Microsoft is not the only one with issues.  In the Froyo era, Google Inc. (GOOG) Android 2.2 update reportedly bricked some handsets.  And more recently Apple suffered serious antenna issues with the iPhone 4 launch, and more issues -- broken maps, a battery life/wallet-draining data bug, and photograph discoloration with the iPhone 5 launch.

Yeah, it's not perfect

Big time Microsoft fan here, got a red Lumia 920 (by the way, AT&T is a disaster, can't even get basic logistics right, I pre-ordered the phone and received it 5 days after becoming available at the stores, but I digress...)

My expectations were very high, so I was bound to experience some letdowns. But hey, it's hardware + software, how could it be bug-free?

My main complaint so far is that the keyboard seems to have a bit more lag than my WP7.5 Samsung Focus. I tried a friend's HTC 8x and saw the same issue, so I don't think it's the hardware, it may be the OS itself. The keyboard should not be slower than my fingers... I can type pretty fast and some letters are simply being "skipped".

Cut the rope only launched correctly the first time, now all I get is a black screen, but the audio appears to be correct. Maybe a reboot will fix this issue, but I haven't rebooted my phone since I got it.

The eagerly awaited Nokia GPS (beta) didn't work at all the first time I tried it, it just wouldn't update my current position. Not quite sure why... The next day though, it came back to its senses and worked fine.

Oh, and one of the features I was most anxious to see (Rooms) is not working for me... The link it sends to my wife's phone (also a Lumia 920) doesn't work.

The Kids' Corner is totally awesome and I set it up on both my wife's phone and mine. There are tons of free games, so I can keep my kid occupied for hours at a time (horrible parent, right there).

I hope they fix these "childhood diseases" quickly.

Wow, somebody actually bought a Samsung Focus? Only 3 were ever sold!

You must be mistaken. The Focus seemed to be one of the highest selling original Windows Phone launch models. You must be thinking of the LG Quantum, which my wife, best friend, and myself all bought one and were the only three ever sold :)

Although my wife did just upgrade to the Lumia 920 over the weekend and she is liking it quite a bit and has not experienced these issues (yet - and hopefully ever).

My wife and I both had them, they were the highest rated Windows 7 phones on the AT&T website 2 years ago :-)

Our IT guy and his girlfriend had the same model too, so I'm quite sure they sold at least 4! :-)

This makes six. My wife and I like ours. At least until hers became thirsty. I gave her mine and now I'm stuck with my old Palm Treo until my next upgrade. (oh pity me)

Dude, I was shocked too... not only is she real, but she's smoking hot too! And smart! :-)

I'm an IT guy with a smoking hot wife with a masters degree. No idea how I pulled it off but I'm not complaining.

I've got the 8X on Verizon and haven't had many issues. No freezing or reboots, so I'm good there. Battery life has been good. In fact because most games were written for WP7.x, playing games has almost no impact on the battery outside of the screen being on because they don't even attempt to push the phone.

I have noticed the keyboard issue, although thought I was just adjusting to the change in screen size from the Trophy I had before. But I think you're onto something there. I do expect that to be fixed rather quickly though. The other problem I've noticed is occasionally when replying to an email I'll type a few letters, then it will erase what I typed and move the curser to the end of my signature. That's the only real annoyance, but since it only happens in the first 5 letters or so it's not the end of the world.

Overall the phone is ridiculously awesome. So fast, the OS runs great, and the new Start screen is really good. I can't believe what a huge impact adding the smaller tile size option can make. I only have a few medium sized ones, no double wide and almost all small tiles. And they're wrapped around the medium tiles so I can use the medium tile as a "section" almost, with like functions wrapped around it.

Oh, and rooms seemed to work fine with my wife's iPhone, surprisingly enough. Even though it's not fully featured, I can share pics and calendar items between the two without issue.

Oh, and I think the Cut the Rope bug is cause by trying to launch it in Kid's Corner. I played it several times and it worked fine, my daughter launched it under Kid's Corner and it did what you explained. Now it won't launch. Haven't tried a reboot because I try to avoid rebooting my phone unless I fly. Curious if it holds up like my WP7.5 did.

Dude, you're right on the money, thank you very much!!! I just tried launching it from the main Games hub, not Kids' Corner and it worked just great!

Awesome workaround :-)

Yes, the phone overall is totally awesome. I was at the doctor's office this morning and took it out to set up my next appointment on my calendar. The receptionist was like "WHAT IS THAT???"... "THAT'S A PHONE???" :-) I was like yeah, my wife has a yellow one, they also have blue, white, gray and black. She called the nurses to come and check it out. So I gracefully demonstrated the Windows 8 Start Screen and some fluid scrolling :-)

Another thing that I like is the voice recognition, now available in the built-in email app as well! And it works amazingly well with my Eastern European accent! :-)

Agreed. I got the California Blue 8X and it looks great. If I were on ATT the 920 would be a no brainer but poor experience in the past makes me not want to use them again.

I haven't played with voice much yet, I'll have to do that now. Something about talking to my phone always seemed odd. I work in a very anti-MS environment and even my coworkers are impressed. One of them was even wishing he had waited on the iPhone 5. Not that we're pro-Apple, lots of Unix and Networking folks. So Linux is relatively popular.
