Sony announced two sales milestones today that affect both its PlayStation 3 gaming console and its PlayStation Move motion controller.

According to Sony, it has sold 70 million PlayStation 3 units globally as of November 4, 2012. This is the cumulative number since its launch in 2006.

Additionally, Sony has sold 15 million PlayStation Move motion controllers globally as of November 11, 2012 since its launch in 2010.

Back in September of this year, it was announced that Sony planned to release a thinner PS3 starting at $270. The latest PS3 console will be available in either 250GB and 500GB bundles. The 250GB bundle will come in either black or white and will have "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception" Game of the Year Edition included. The price tag is set at $269.99. For those more interested in the 500GB model, it will come in black only alongside the "Assassin's Creed III" release.

Sony also made huge changes to the Trophies section on the PS3 via a system software update (Version 4.30) in October.

The Japanese electronics maker has had some financial trouble in recent years due to issues like a sinking TV division, but new Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai is leading a major restructuring plan for the company that includes focusing on gaming as one of the major three pillars (the other two are digital imaging and mobile).

How does that compared to overall Wii sales?

This recent article seems to indicate that analysts are all giddy about the Wii U - personally I can't see it selling like they think it will, but if you look at the article here:

...you can see that when mentioning original Wii sales, they seem to indicate that the Wii sold 75.9 million units in the first four years of it's existence alone - 2006 to 2010.

I don't know what the Wii did from that point forward...anybody have a better link?

Holy sh1ts.

So the Wii, still to this day, continues to obliterate the other consoles in volume sales. I figured it probably petered out at least a year ago.

Impressive...but anyway, I still don't believe the projections on the Wii U. The little wand-style Wii controller really lent itself to the motion-controlled games - but that giant chunka controller with the screen in it? I just don't see that working out all that well.

Yep, and cheap cell phones out sold expensive ones. Cheap cars out sold expensive cars. Cheap computers out sold expensive computers.

XBOX and PS3 generate more revenue since the average Wii console sells 3 games, where the average XBOX/PS3 console sells over a dozen.

I'd also guess Live content is also far superior to Nintendo's Wii Store. I think Metroid 3 and other emulated games are cool and all, but the XBOX has far superior online content.

The only reason LIVE has better content--if it even does--is because MS has basically waved piles of cash in the faces of all the content owners. That's the only reason why games which were originally nintendo-specific are now only available on LIVE.

I will NEVER forgive MS for blocking DK64 being released on VC.

DK64 is a Rare title. Rare originally had a partnership with Nintendo, but when the company wanted to sell Nintendo was not interested. As a result Microsoft bought it. This is basic capitalism, not ms waving "piles of cash in the faces of all the content owners."

Well. I'm sure there is some sorta of quality issue to factor in there. I don't like the Wii, but it wasn't a bad system; but seriously its after a different market just as the VW Passat vs M5. Two totally different markets.

I wouldnt say that. 1.5 to 1 is not obliterate. 5 to 1 like Android over IOS is "obliterating". LOL

You really love bragging about all of those disposable low end Android phones being sold to the poor and the third world, don't you? ;)

Over half of mobile traffic, mobile ad revenue, and mobile app downloads are still on the iOS side, despite the difference. Is that big a gap in OS marketshare really substantial when most of it is on the low end?

Its like bragging about how huge Windows is when the bulk of installations are XP running on $400 econoboxes in data entry offices and call centers. I think Windows is great but I don't delude myself into thinking that most people are running fast rigs like I am.

Considering the tech in the Wii I think you should compare it with the PS2 instead. I which case the 154.4 million units sold by Sony really puts Nintendo to shame :-)

As for the Wii U then I totally agree with you.

Personally I think my next console will be the PS4. My gen 1. PS3 is still used all the time, while the Wii isn't even connected and it is so long since I powered up the 360 that I have considered making it an actual door stop :-)

The Wii was competing with the PS3 and the XBox360, so why not compare it with a system that it was designed to compete with? Because fanboys still like to hate!!!!
