It also sold 15 million PlayStation Move units

Sony announced two sales milestones today that affect both its PlayStation 3 gaming console and its PlayStation Move motion controller.

According to Sony, it has sold 70 million PlayStation 3 units globally as of November 4, 2012. This is the cumulative number since its launch in 2006.

Additionally, Sony has sold 15 million PlayStation Move motion controllers globally as of November 11, 2012 since its launch in 2010.

Back in September of this year, it was announced that Sony planned to release a thinner PS3 starting at $270. The latest PS3 console will be available in either 250GB and 500GB bundles. The 250GB bundle will come in either black or white and will have "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception" Game of the Year Edition included. The price tag is set at $269.99. For those more interested in the 500GB model, it will come in black only alongside the "Assassin's Creed III" release.

Sony also made huge changes to the Trophies section on the PS3 via a system software update (Version 4.30) in October.

The Japanese electronics maker has had some financial trouble in recent years due to issues like a sinking TV division, but new Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai is leading a major restructuring plan for the company that includes focusing on gaming as one of the major three pillars (the other two are digital imaging and mobile).

Expensive Console

The biggest problem with the PS3 has always been its price. The fact that even after several redesigns, 6 years, and the removal of features, it still has a minimum entry price of $270 is alarming.

6 year old technology should not be that expensive.

I can only hope that the next generation of consoles benefit from economies of scale and process improvements far more than this generation has.

6 year old technology should not be that expensive.

So Netflix subscriptions should get cheaper every year? The price isn't for the "technology", the price is for entry into the ecosystem, more like admission to a theme park than a price for an item.

hardware vs. software/media

The hardware is cheaper the software/media gets more expensive.
The playstation console is hardware and something like netflix is media.

Yes the PS3 was the most expensive out of the box, but it was still cheaper than the xbox 360. You seem to be comparing the cheaper HD-Less 360 to the PS3, which all of them include an HD.

Once you bought the MS-ONLY HD, the price exceeded the PS3. 360s also have a limit on drive size. While on the PS3, you can upgrade the HD your self for a less price without requiring a kit.

How well do those blu-ray or even HD-DVD discs play on the 360?
The FAT 360s required an optional $80~100 WiFi adapter which sucked up a USB port... oh, yeah - you seemed to have forgotten that too.

The PS3 came with wireless controllers... always. MS switched to wireless.

On an on and on. MS rushed the 360 to market, how many of those millions of units are really nothing more than replacement units? I've seen tons of posts with people on their 3rd or 4th 360.

MS is helping to kill PC gaming... I'll buy either a PS3 or PS4... when I buy our next console. Otherwise, my kid is quite happy with is Wii console.

Customers are dumb and only look at shelf price. They don't see how small amounts over time in services and upgrades add up to a lot. 6 years of live is like $200.
