New superphone is rumored to be 5-inch, quad-core "Yuga"
Sony Corp. (
) was rumored to be
in the running to make the next Nexus phone
for Google Inc. (
the Nexus 4 contract
was awarded to the Japanese firm's South Korean rival LG Electronics (
) who offered up a 4.7-inch, quad-core powered design.
Undeterred Sony, according to a
, will be releasing an Android superphone of its own. The phone is expected to be a large screen design dubbed "Yuga". Some sources say the 1080p display will be 6-inches (making it more of a phone-cum-tablet than a pure phone); others expect it to be a 5-inch 1080p unit.
Most sources point to it packing a
quad-core Snapdragon 4 chip
from Qualcomm, Inc. (
), possibly the APQ8064, paired with 2 GB of DRAM. It is expected to run
Android Jelly Bean v1
(4.1.1) out of the box, with an upgraded to the second major version of Jelly Bean (v2) on the horizon.
Those snazzy specs would place it directly in the superphone discussion versus Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd.'s (
Galaxy S III
and Apple, Inc.'s (
-- the two handsets that currently
post the highest unit sales
Of course to get in that discussion Sony will have to beat out other potential challengers
like the Droid DNA
from HTC Corp. (
), which is expected to be the flagship phone on America's largest carrier, Verizon Wireless.
Thus far Sony has released some interesting Android handsets such as the
Gingerbread-powered Xperia Play 4G
The PlayStation Phone
") and the
"Live With Walkman" music-minded handset
. While its lineup shows more variety and differentiation than most of the Android pack, lack of high end models have led to slow sales for the Asian OEM.
"Yuga" is a word from Hindu philosophy that refers to an "era" or "epoch".

Which data sheet are you looking at, Latest one I seen Gartner report shows Android mobile smartphone sales now over 72.4% and growing up from 52.5% last year.
While IOS went from 15% to 13.9%.
Now if you take into account tablets as well then Android is over 90% market penetration may drop off a bit now that Windows 8 devices are out but time will tell.
Android is about to steal another IOS customer now that my dream phone has finally been released where I am, Galaxy Note II.
The reality is it's the same no matter which device you use, Android is used by all ages as well you know.
