New superphone is rumored to be 5-inch, quad-core "Yuga"

Sony Corp. (TYO:6758) was rumored to be in the running to make the next Nexus phone for Google Inc. (GOOG).  Instead the Nexus 4 contract was awarded to the Japanese firm's South Korean rival LG Electronics (KSC:066570) who offered up a 4.7-inch, quad-core powered design.

Undeterred Sony, according to a Phone Arena report, will be releasing an Android superphone of its own.  The phone is expected to be a large screen design dubbed "Yuga".  Some sources say the 1080p display will be 6-inches (making it more of a phone-cum-tablet than a pure phone); others expect it to be a 5-inch 1080p unit.

Most sources point to it packing a quad-core Snapdragon 4 chip from Qualcomm, Inc. (QCOM), possibly the APQ8064, paired with 2 GB of DRAM.  It is expected to run Android Jelly Bean v1 (4.1.1) out of the box, with an upgraded to the second major version of Jelly Bean (v2) on the horizon.

Those snazzy specs would place it directly in the superphone discussion versus Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd.'s (KSC:005930) Galaxy S III and Apple, Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone 5 -- the two handsets that currently post the highest unit sales.

Of course to get in that discussion Sony will have to beat out other potential challengers like the Droid DNA from HTC Corp. (TPE:2498), which is expected to be the flagship phone on America's largest carrier, Verizon Wireless.

Thus far Sony has released some interesting Android handsets such as the Gingerbread-powered Xperia Play 4G (aka "The PlayStation Phone") and the "Live With Walkman" music-minded handset.  While its lineup shows more variety and differentiation than most of the Android pack, lack of high end models have led to slow sales for the Asian OEM.

"Yuga" is a word from Hindu philosophy that refers to an "era" or "epoch".

Why the fuck is it in this discussion? It's a smart phone for seniors and hipsters.
Wow, bro, I think you need to relax.

I would never buy an iPhone, as I prefer not using a UI that looks like it was transported in a time machine from the 90s; one that's been made iteratively uglier with icon bins (usability at the expense of looks) and red notification dots (these are an eyesore).

And I generally dislike Apple's approach towards suing everybody, though to be fair, it's not that far off what Microsoft has done. Ultimately the courts are most to blame for that, but sure Apple is a little too.

BUT I think you're positively crazy if you deny that at present Apple still has the best app selection (some high-end apps are still iOS exclusive, though that lead is shrinking), has one of the most striking BODY designs in the industry, and has just about the best hardware in a 4-inch package out there.

Sure it lacks NFC, but to me that's more of a gimmick. To be fair I feel a lot of Apple's features -- Siri, etc. -- are gimmicks as well. But I would say at the end of the day Apple's iPhone has a lot of negatives (which are the reason I could never use one for my general purpose phone), but also a lot of positives.

It's easy to see why the iPhone is in the discussion still, even if you dislike Apple's business practices.

I have an old flip top mobile phone you know the ones that sell for around £13 -£20 in a lot of shops.

I love my phone it does everything I could ever want it to do, I can make and receive calls and I can send and receive texts. Wonderful cheap and works every time.My battery last for days even when I make a lot of calls and it charges rather quickly too. OK so I only have a very very small screen but hey I only look at it when I need to input a number or text. And the screen is very well protected by the flip screen.

Ok so I love coming here and elsewhere on the internet to check out what people are making and the crazy prices people are paying for there phones, some justified at the amount of processing power but way above anything I would pay for a phone. I have a laptop for the internet and when I am out and about I am normally walking or driving or talking so to have a small computer is crazy for day to day use, for me that is.

The other day I got my wife a new phone, she had a Samsung Monte for a while and was rather happy with that but I thought I would treat her to something with a larger screen, she loves displaying photos and using social networking apps to keep up with the family overseas,And she really needed an android phone with all the apps she can use.

So I searched and I searched and I decided on the Ascend G300. It has a 4" screen or 4.3" I am not 100% sure, she is crazy madly in love with it and the pink bumper I got for her to put on it.

I just updated to ics for her and she has mentioned a few times how much faster it is, so it must have made a big difference.

Now I know there are some amazing phones out there but if you do anything in the next few days try to get your hands on one of these phones and you will realise why Huawei is number 4 on the list above.

And what did I pay for this amazing device, £90.00 yup that is not a typing error, an amazingly fast smooth and responsive phone for under £100. It has the screen size of the iphone or a little bigger and it can do everything that an iphone does almost. With one of the latest versions of the Android OS that some phones still have to upgrade to this phone is the bees knees and even though I am not interested in buying a smartphone this is so tempting at the price for what it is, even if I just use the sat-nav on it from time to time it will be worth the money.
