Sprint to Arrive Late to the Windows Phone Party in 2013

Sprint "pulls an iPhone" when it comes to Windows Phone
Sprint Nextel Corp. (
) lately seems to have a knack for latching onto other carriers' good ideas well after the party has started. Sprint
to become America's
third and final major iPhone carrier
, is now looking to be a late guest at another hot party -- Windows Phone 8.
The good news for fans of the nation's third largest carrier, and sole remaining proprietor of "unlimited" mobile data, is that you will eventually get your hands on Windows Phone 8. The bad news is that you won't get the opportunity to get your hands on WP8 hardware this year.
Sprint is the
only major U.S. carrier not to offer WP8 hardware
for the holidays.
In an emailed statement to
a Sprint spokesperson
, "Sprint and Microsoft are partnering to bring Windows Phone 8 to Sprint's customers - operating on its 4G LTE network - next year."
The carrier previously did test the waters with a single Windows Phone 7 device -- HTC Corp.'s (
) Arrive. While lacking hardware-wise, the Arrive nonetheless held the highest owner satisfaction score on Sprint for some time. But the enthusiasm was not enough to stop Sprint from
killing sales of the badly aging handset earlier this year
, nor was it enough to guarantee an immediate replacement.
Sprint will be the last major carrier to board the Windows Phone 8 train, arriving in 2013.
But Windows Phone does have a key ally at Sprint in a pivotal position. David Owens, director of device acquisition at the carrier, in May said he felt "bullish" about the LTE-endowed Windows Phone 8 platform.
For the holidays Sprint customers will have to choose between a smaller selection than on rival carriers. However, the carrier is offering some premium handsets on other platforms, including Apple, Inc.'s (
, Samsung Electronics Comp. Ltd.'s (
phone-cum-tablet Galaxy Note II
, and LG Electronics, Inc.'s (
One good thing for those waiting for Windows Phone 8 is that you'll at least likely be treated to broader LTE coverage, versus Sprint's
current relatively lackluster deployment
, which only covers select areas of the Midwest, including Chicago and St. Louis, along with a handful of other locations nationwide.
Softbank Corp. (
) a rising power in the Japanese market is
set to take majority of ownership of Sprint
in early 2013 after a purchase plan announced in mid-October. The deal is worth $20.1B USD.

Just left for AT&T

Too late, I just left Sprint, took my family plan and bought 4 shiny new Lumia 920's from AT&T. Should have done that a long time ago. You always think that your phone is still pretty decent until you get on a new carrier and experience new hardware and suddenly it feels like you're in a new decade. Btw. Family Hub is an amazing feature if you have an active family with lots of after school activities.

I just left AT&T for Sprint. I was wondering why it took me so long to do this. Sprint gives my family plan trul unlimited for 5 phones at 180 dollars. By the end of next year they will have the fastest 4g network and the largest capacity to enable unlimited data for some time to come. Adieu ATT!

That's the problem with Sprint; they're always lagging behind on either their network or their phone selection. I'm on Sprint and have the HTC Arrive, but AT&T will have LTE here by the end of
year, and Verizon already has LTE. The network downtown is spotty at best for Sprint; it's hard enough for me to get data reliably with a decent signal. I really see myself switching from Sprint to AT&T or Verizon soon.
I don't see myself going over a 3GB/month limit, but WP8's Data Sense feature should help me out in this way.

Always lagging behind???
I would say they definitely are lagging, but not always. HTC EVO 4G (original). When the original EVO was released and Sprint brought 4G to their customers, that was ahead of everyone (at least in the US). Granted, the WiMax adoption rate was horrible, but that's still not lagging.
Neways - I'm on Sprint, their Data speeds in comparison suck, and their current Phone selection is mediocre. However, I'll try them out one more time as I cannot bring myself to pay at a minimum $50 more a month to switch my family plan from Sprint to Verizon or AT&T.
I know, you get what you pay for - but I'll take the crappy speeds (for now) and see what they do with their LTE deployment in the coming year - if their speeds/quality become what they are advertising, then I made a great choice...
