The new ATG-4 tech offers a peak speed of 9.8 Mbps, which is triple the speed of previous networks at a peak of 3.1 Mbps

Gogo announced that it has provided its latest connectivity technology -- ATG-4 -- to three major airlines for high-speed browsing. 

Gogo, an in-flight connectivity provider, has launched its next generation ATG-4 connectivity technology in Virgin America, Delta Air Lines and U.S. Airways planes. 

The new ATG-4 tech offers a peak speed of 9.8 Mbps, which is triple the speed of previous networks at a peak of 3.1 Mbps. Gogo is capable of providing this kind of speed through ATG-4's three new features: the deployment of EV-DO Rev. B technology, added directional antennas and dual modems on each aircraft. 

"This significant step in Gogo's technology roadmap allows us to better address the demand for in-air connectivity services," said Michael Small, Gogo's president and CEO. "We continue to find ways to implement new technologies that bring more bandwidth to the aero market." 

Virgin America was the first to receive ATG-4 technology, but "hundreds" more installations of the speedy network are expected to roll out before the end of 2013. For instance, American Airlines and United's p.s. fleet are expected to receive ATG-4 in 2013. 

Back in June, Gogo partnered with SES to provide in-flight Internet over the U.S., Europe and the Atlantic. They're doing this by using high-throughput Ku-band capacity on current and future SES satellites.
