T-Mobile is still losing post-paid customers

T-Mobile USA has announced its Q3 2012 operating results and the company racked up total revenues of $4.9 billion during the quarter, which is a decrease of 6.4% year-over-year. Total service revenues for the year were $4.3 million, a decrease of 8.7% year-over-year. T-Mobile did increase prepaid revenues to $450 million, for a 38% increase year-over-year.
 
T-Mobile now has 365,000 branded prepaid customers and reduced its branded contract churn rate. That branded contract churn rate is now 2.3% and T-Mobile says that is an improvement of 30 basis points year-over-year.

T-Mobile says that the rated branded net contract customer losses in Q3 improved slightly sequentially to 492,000 compared to 557,000 in Q2. However branded net contract customer losses did increase year-over-year compared to 389,000 customers lost in Q3 of 2011.
 
T-Mobile blames that loss on the iPhone 5, which is available on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.

The $4 billion T-Mobile 4G network modernization plan is also underway. The mobile carrier launched its first HSPA+ networks on 1900 PCS spectrum in Q3 2012.

“We continue to make solid progress with our Challenger Strategy, as evidenced by our strong performance in prepaid services, the growing attractiveness of our Value and Unlimited plans, the execution of our network modernization program, and the expansion of our popular handset portfolio,” said John Legere, President and CEO of T-Mobile USA.
 
It was announced in early October that T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS would be joining forces in the U.S. wireless market. The proposed deal would result in the fourth largest U.S. carrier with just over 42 million customers.

Best prepaid plans

T-Mobile has the best prepaid plans. I suspect AT&T and Verizon make their prepaid plans unattractive so as to push customers to post-paid plans.

Plus, as someone already noted, dealing with T-Mobile is easy. It takes all of five minutes to get a phone AND a number. By comparison, it took my daughter an hour at AT&T to simply upgrade to the Galaxy III (from her broken iPhone 4.)
