Big growth coming in the enterprise segment

In 2013, research firm Gartner believes that 1.2 billion smartphones and tablets combine will be purchased around the world. The research firm predicts 821 million smart devices will be sold this year.

Gartner is also predicting that tablet sales to businesses will grow substantially in the coming years as businesses start to adopt the form-factor, albeit at a slower rate than consumers. Gartner predicts that Windows 8 will be the third most popular operating system for tablets by 2016 behind iOS and Android OS. 

Analysts at Gartner are also predicting two-thirds of the mobile workforce will have smartphones by 2016 and that Android OS will be the leader in the enterprise environment accounting for 56% of smartphones purchased by businesses in North America and Europe by 2016. Apple devices will continue to grow in the enterprise segments.

“Today the wide range of brands and price points that the Android ecosystem offers is winning over users. While Apple remains the heartbeat by which the market moves, Google has rapidly become its archrival,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner, in a statement.

I know readers on DailyTech are Apple haters but if I'm the IT executive at a company, I'm deploying the iPhone.

There is absolutely not way I'm deploying Android and then have to support it. Stock, the iPhone is simply easier to maintain and use for IT support and company employees. It's also the best overall phone in terms of hardware and apps.

I agree with you, but Microsoft has a FANTASTIC opportunity to make some inroads in the business segment. The reason people are using iDevices in a business environment is because Microsoft isn't really producing a compelling device for enterprises. This may change with Microsoft's new phone and surface tablet though. Hopefully with the new mobile devices (phones and tablets) I'd have the ability to manage them through SCCM and control security parameters through a GPO while still giving a great user experience. THAT'S were Microsoft needs to focus their efforts. Not the consumer area.

MS has to get the UI interface right before proceeding with the government and large enterprises. RIM who use to be the only gov. contract now shares them with Apple and Android OEMs.

Some companies are going BYOD nowadays. For those working with less than sensitive information that means, in theory, a split equal to overall market share.

I do think however that Windows Phone will get a bigger share among businesses which do provide a device than it will in the consumer market. Going 'all Microsoft' has to be a big temptation for IT departments who are already MS-centric.

Why "deploy" anything. Both use EAS for email, that is all you should need to support. Most companies just have a "bring your own phone" or at least "pick your own". Let people get whatever they want and you give them email.

A lot of companies are doing BYOD aka consumerized IT. However, for companies that have sensitive information(most do), they'll want to deploy a standard phone so they can control it.

In this case, I would choose the iPhone over Android.

Of course nothing is secured. But let's go back to the stone age and not use smart phones?

No, just understand that email isn't secure, so you don't want to be putting highly sensitive info on any mobile phone.. If you think WP8's mail client's EAS is any different than the iPhone mail client's EAS or Android's EAS you are mistaken. If its "top secret" keep it off your phone.

Configuring active sync on either platform is essentially the same process, we deployed bunch of Galaxy SIII and one iphone 5 in the last month, no difference.

Of course, in my case it's not "if I'm the IT executive", I actually am one.
