It has been five years since "Halo 3" was released, and it looks as if "Halo" fans were more than ready for the successor

"Halo 4," which features the return of "Master Chief," was released today for Microsoft's Xbox 360. 

The first-person shooter is the first game in a new trilogy of the "Halo" series. It takes place three years after "Halo 3" ended, and represents the return of the Master Chief as the protagonist. 

It has been five years since "Halo 3" was released, and it looks as if "Halo" fans were more than ready for the successor. 

"Because there hasn't been a game to star "Master Chief" for five years, there's a bit of a pent-up demand," said Ryan McCaffrey, Xbox Executive Editor at IGN.com.

"Halo 4's" plot is centralized around "Master Chief" and his ability to kill evil aliens while trying to save his AI friend, Cortana. 

While the "Halo" series was on break, the "Call of Duty" series stepped in as the most popular games on the Xbox. Now, "Halo 4" will closely compete with "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2," which will be released next week on November 18. 

Ahead of "Halo 4's" launch, Microsoft said this would be the best "Halo" yet. 

"Fans worldwide will experience the biggest, most detailed 'Halo' universe yet," said Microsoft. "The game features more weapons, more enemies, more detailed animations and more ways to play with friends. 

"One thing that hasn't changed is the hardware the game runs on, the Xbox 360. That was one of the challenges for the engineering team at 343 Industries (the new internal studio at Microsoft, helming the franchise): how to do more, not with less, but with the same hardware that's been around since 2005."

"Halo" was originally released in 2001. It has sold 46 million copies and generated $3 billion of revenue in the franchise since. 

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced a "Halo 4" bundle, which contains a Halo 4-themed console with blue and grey coloring and a custom controller that has blue LEDs as opposed to the usual green LEDs. 

The bundle, which appears to include the special edition Halo 4 console, the Halo 4 game, and two controllers, was rumored to run around $399.99 while a stand-alone controller will cost $49.99.

still dreaming about pc port but it will never come

i dont understand they did pc port of original halo and it was soooo much fun one of the best pc shooters i played but then they stopped with halo 2 being unplayable mess because of unconfigurable controls

although graphics was simple and levels were often clones of each other i still enjoyed it immensely the shooting mechanics and tough enemies on legendary level were super delight to fight with

and now im dreamin about halo used as a launch vehicle for win8 and wp8 the way it was used to push xbox. silly me. ms is notoriously bad in using its own ip assets to promote its platforms. im sure there would be quite a few early adopters of win8 and wp8 if ms fessed up and did nice slick ports to wp8 surface and win8.

i can dream eh :(

Actually Pirks, I think you will find Halo was originally supposed to be an RTS and for the Macintosh.

Then Microsoft gobbled up Bungie, made it an FPS, released it on Xbox then PC and turned it onto one of gaming's most iconic franchises.
Halo is to Microsoft what Mario is to Nintendo.

It could be argued that without Halo, the Xbox console wouldn't have been that successful today as when a Halo game launches it actually moves a heck of allot of consoles.

Yes it would be nice to have the game on the PC so we can "Play it the way it is meant to be played" - I.E in Eyefinity/Surround vision with all settings set to max, but Microsoft doesn't really make games on the PC anymore.

They folded up Ensemble studios the makers of Age of Empires (Which then moved on to Robot entertainment).
Lionhead Studio now only makes Xbox games.
RARE never really made PC games to begin with and now are pretty much a kids-games/Kinect studio.
They closed down FASA Studios who made Mechwarrior.
Bungie ran away screaming like a little school girl as they wanted to be independent again and not work on Halo for the rest of it's life. (Understandable!)

The fantastic thing about all this after EA, Microsoft, Activision, Ubisoft, Epic Games etc' all pretty much neglected the PC gaming platform, they are now slowly being replaced by new developers and kickstarter.
So many new games I am actually excited about are now in the works as a PC exclusive title like Planetary Annihilation, Star Citizen, Project Eternity just to name a few.

ya you don't say stevo, I donated $100 to eternity, $60 to star citizen and then I went nuts and donated $250 (!!!!) to wasteland 2, 'cause I realized these are the guys behind the original fallout franchise. in fact I donated $100 but then later they stated that mark morgan is back!!! the second I heard it I upped my donation to $250, I'm still jumping around and screaming hurrraaahhh every time I recall he's back and writing his magic music for wasteland 2. this was the best news of the month when I heard about him

this is the killa movie the stupid kiddie shit owned hollywood would never make but it seems to be JUST AS COOL AS SIN CITY!! at least judging by the art and by the trailer. I'm not sure they will make it in 4 days left so please guys help them out! I'm dying to see this cartoon released so I donated $60 as well

Available on Mac, PC, and Linux through Steam, GOG, and straight from the developer. Its from a little indie but it might be my favorite game this year. It is excellent (and terribly addictive).

ya I wasted 10 bucks on it but the graphics are super ugly :D maybe i didnt get the vibe yet or something... i just started and killed one ship but its not very addictive yet. maybe hafta play more. better be so!

FTL suffers from a common problem in a lot of indie games where to make up for engaging controls, 3D graphics, and other interactivity the game play relegates the player the unenviable task of navigating context menus and managing UI boxes endlessly to get anything done. After a few hours FTL feels more like a spreadsheet editor than a space adventure. But if navigating menus and text boxes for hours and hours

I've played another indie game with promise off and on for years now called Wurm Online, so trust me I know what I speak of. It's the king of context menu abuse and gets tedious fast. For example if you want to attack something, you can't just walk up to it and press an "attack" key. Nope, you have to right click on the creature which opens up a context menu, mouse down to "Combat", which opens ANOTHER context menu, and then click "attack". Oh and you better not let the mouse cursor stray too far from the menu, or you have to repeat the whole process. Fun right?

I don't know on what planet where something like FTL offers more game play and fun over Halo4, but I think it's populated with TakinYourPoints and a few other nerds.

The graphics and music are great, its all part of the style.

And yeah, killing one ship doesn't tell you anything about the game. :) Just give it a little bit for the mechanics to sink in, its super fun once you get it, plus it is randomly generated so every playthrough is very unique.

Again, super great, just give it a few minutes to sink its teeth into you. :)

And ofc we also have superior games like Starcraft 2 and DOTA 2. Screw the companies you mentioned, MS most of all since they threw PC gaming under the bus at the expense of the 360. Shutting down Ensemble, ACES, FASA, all while keeping their remaining self-published titles 360 exclusive was ridiculous.

Thankfully there are so many other great companies doing interesting and innovative work on the PC, and we still have Valve and Blizzard keeping the platform viable. Hell, my favorite game this year might be FTL, an amazing (and addictive) indie. Its available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it is amazing.

As for Halo, zzzzzzzz.....

Bungie was doing great things, Marathon on Mac back in the days was very underrated.

I remember there was those kits available and you could replace dats and after a lot of work, I was shooting my friends instead of those aliens.

All that quickly went away, idk, w/o pc multiplayer, that golden age of fps is a memory to me.

I really enjoyed Halo PC. Wife and I used to play it alot, and we'd play it at lan parties. It was fantastic.

However M$ decided to be jerks about it and didn't do PC versions after Halo 2 (and even then it was like a year later). Unreal Tournament 3 was eventually our replacement, but I've still never used a vehicle that felt quite like the warthog.

You clearly have your games mixed up, unreal tournament was a fun game but there was nothing original about it, lots of guns lots of deaths, typical of the fps of the day Most of which is now gone and unreal rather blatantly ripped off the warthog from halo. Meanwhile halo's two weapon, regenerative shields and always available melee have now become standard for fps games - it was one of the first to introduce all these elements together and certainly one of the most prominent.

There will never be a PC port because HALO was created just to sell the XBOX. In my opinion, it was never more than a "wannabee" version of unreal tournament--graphics and content watered down for consoles.

To be fair though, none of the console FPS offerings really "blow my hair back". I have been frequently disappointed for quite some time. Goldeneye remake was like raping my college memories. Timesplitters:FP was probably the last shooter I played that felt somewhat engaging. Rail-shooters seem to be much more enjoyable on a consle.

If they released Halo 4 for the PC (assuming that the DRM wasn't overly intrusive and that Windows 7 were supported) I would almost certainly pick it up, even if they waited a while before porting it. I get that Halo is a cornerstone of the Xbox franchise, but I don't own a 360, I don't plan to get one...and I would kind of like to get in on this Halo business.
