Amazon Prime Monthly service  (Source: Hacking Netflix)
Monthly subscription will cost more than yearly rate

Historically, the only way to get an Amazon Prime subscription was to pay one $79 per year fee. However, Amazon is now offering a monthly Prime subscription at $7.99 per month. To get people to try out Prime, Amazon is even offering up a free one-month trial of the service. After that one-month trial, the Prime membership will cost $7.99 per month.

Perhaps the best thing about the monthly service is that there is no minimum order size to get free two-day shipping on millions of items. The real and often overlooked benefit of Prime is the dirt-cheap next-day shipping. For somewhere around three dollars, you can get your items the next day.

Monthly prime subscribers also get unlimited instant streaming of movies and TV shows with Prime Instant Video and a free Kindle digital book each month from the Kindle Owners Lending Library. Amazon is obviously getting very serious about its streaming video offering with the monthly price of $7.99. It's on par with Netflix and Hulu Plus, with one major benefit over both of those services of having free shipping on all sorts of products sold by Amazon and a free digital book each month.

So... sign up for Christmas and then leave?

What is to stop me from signing up for the holiday season, taking 30 free days of cheap expedited shipping, and then bolting the next month? And then next year I'll pay $7.99 to receive cheap expedited shipping and bolt the next month.

I ship so much crap during December alone that the $79 was actually worth it. I rarely buy physical goods from Amazon at other times of the year. Now I don't have to pay $79... I can pay $7.99. Hooray.

Somehow I don't see Amazon being terribly heartbroken that you've decided to do the vast majority your holiday shopping with them.

Especially when all it costs them is the price of shipping, something they have become extremely operationally efficient at. It sounds like a win-win for both of you.

I suspect they're counting on the number of people thinking they'll do that and then forgetting will make it worthwhile overall. Kinda like how my parents spent 6 or 8 years paying AOL $25/mo after the 3mo free they got with their new Compaq instead of switching to the $20(15?)/mo local ISP like they intended. (And if it wasn't for a long distance pop number snafu and the resulting several hundred dollar phonebill I doubt they've switched to DSL yet.)

Pretty sure they make more on actual sold goods than shipping charges anyway.

Nothing whatsoever to prevent it. In fact, I did it a couple times, before I went for the full year.

However, Shane, not everything is shipped 2-day, regardless of order size. Amazon recently started do "add-on" items, that require non-Prime members to have a $25 order, and Prime members to have other item(s), in order for the add-on items to ship free. In fact, they won't even consider the order, if it only has add-on items. One of the reasons why I'm letting my Prime membership lapse.

Also, the upgrade to 1-day shipping is a set price (think it's $2 or $3) PER ITEM in the order. Got 5 small items in your order? Ships 2-day for free, but will cost you $10 or $15 extra to have them ship 1-day! Really only worthwhile if you absolutely have to have it one day sooner!
