The king of tablets continues its reign
The "iPad train" continues to roll over the competition and bring in massive profits for Apple. Apple announced the fourth generation iPad and the new iPad mini two weeks ago, and both officially launched on Friday.
Today, Apple announced that it sold three million Wi-Fi only fourth generation iPads and iPad minis during the first three days of availability. This is double the figure of the 1.5 million third generation iPads with Wi-Fi that were sold during its launch weekend in March. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't break down the sales mix between the two devices, but we'd assume that the cheaper iPad mini made up the bulk of the sales.
Apple is only talking about Wi-Fi versions of the fourth generation iPad and iPad mini because the LTE version of those tablets won’t ship until mid-November.
“Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We're working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand.”
For those who need a refresher, the iPad mini starts at $329 (16GB), includes an A5 processor, and a 7.9" display with a resolution of 1024x768. The fourth generation iPad looks exactly like its third generation predecessor, but includes a faster A6X processor and a new HD camera for FaceTime.
