Samsung's Galaxy S III continues to be a big seller

Apple may be basking in glory of the iPhone 5, but Samsung has a heavyweight champion of its own in the smartphone sector. Samsung this weekend announced that it has shipped 30 million of its latest flagship smartphone: the Galaxy S III.
 
The Galaxy S III has only been on the market since May, so that makes the feat even more astounding. Incredibly, the Galaxy S III's sales performance vastly outpaces that of its predecessor -- it took Samsung 14 months to cross the 30 million unit sales threshold with the Galaxy S II.
 
 
The Galaxy S III played a big roll in Samsung's blockbuster Q3 earnings report. The South Korean company saw $7.4 billion in profit (up 90 percent from the same period a year ago), which was mostly buoyed by 56.3 million smartphones shipped during the quarter.

Samsung has also struck a cord with audiences with its humorous television commercials that poke fun at rabid Apple fans that wait in long lines to purchase the latest iDevice.

There are other devices out there but Samsung is far and away the only ones outside of Apple having any wild success in the market. You can certainly buy other phones, hell, there are loads of great WP devices out there, but it doesn't mean that people are buying them in any real numbers. Everyone's numbers are reflecting that, just look at how much financial trouble HTC is in right now.

HTC and the other losers in the Android race can turn themselves around, certainly, but that's more far fetched than Samsung continuing to dominate way that they have. I don't claim to have a crystal ball, but momentum does count for a lot. Public opinion of those others continue to decline.

I didn't even discount other Android manufacturers btw, there is a difference between disappearing completely and being a distant second/third place.

All I am saying it that this whole smartphone thing is in its infancy. Android is now outselling iPhone 5 to 1 and that gap is widening every quarter in this growing market. There is plenty of room for any vendor to step to the front. Right now its Samsung... That is nothing more than right now.

I'm assuming that you're talking about the entirety of Samsung's devices (crap-phones and top of the line). If we're comparing top of the line then Samsung is far from top, the prior iPhone cleared 30 million in almost half the time the S3 did, and the iPhone 5 looks to do more than that in a single quarter.

Not that I care for sales matches like you and Swash do. Only consideration for me is that a platform has enough users and developer support to make it solid for applications. Hence my use of Windows, OS X, and iOS. After that marketshare really doesn't matter much to me as I don't engage in bragging contests like much of this board does.
