AT&T Reports Better-Than-Expected Q3 Results; Breaks Android/Windows Phone Sales Record

AT&T especially excelled in smartphone sales during the third quarter at 6.1 million sales (up 1.3 million from one year ago)
AT&T announced strong third quarter financial earnings with record Android and Windows Phone activations.
The carrier reported earnings of $3.6 billion USD (63 cents per share) in Q3 2012, which beat Wall Street expectations of 60 cents per share. Revenue closely matched that from a year ago at $31.5 billion.

, where 18 percent represented new customers. About 1.3 million of those were the iPhone 5. AT&T also mentioned that Q3 was its best sales quarter for Android and Windows smartphones, but didn't provide any numbers.
Q3 2012 wireless revenue was at $16.6 billion, which is a 6.6 percent increase from one year ago.
Subscriber growth increased from 100.7 million in Q3 2011 to 105.9 million in Q3 2012. Postpaid subscriber growth also inched up from 68.6 million in Q3 2011 to 69.7 million in Q3 2012.
"We had another impressive quarter with strong earnings growth, record cash flows and solid returns to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks," said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and CEO. "In wireless, we had another excellent smartphone quarter, penetration of usage-based mobile data plans continues to climb, and our
4G LTE network
build is ahead of schedule. And in wireline, our IP network continues to deliver strong gains in U-verse high speed Internet connections, which helped drive an almost 10 percent increase in broadband data ARPU.
"Our strong performance allows us to increase our free cash flow guidance to $18 billion or higher this year, exceeding our previous outlook by $2 billion."
AT&T said it looks forward to Q4 2012, which will feature many Windows 8-based smartphones and tablets. AT&T will exclusively sell the flagship Windows Phone 8, which is
the Nokia Lumia 920
. It will also be the only carrier to sell the Lumia 820 as well as Windows 8 tablets from ASUS and Samsung.

subsidized cell phone contracts are an American exclusive.
nowhere else in the world will you hear of such a concept, mostly because the rest of the world would immediately do the math and realize after about 10 months into the 24 month contract, your getting screwed for the remaining 14 months.
a cell phone contract is like a credit card you carry a 2 year interest-bearing balance on, which we all know, is bad.
BTW, France has super cheap electricity, currently 0.1078kw/h. Over 90% of it is clean, modern nuclear power, and they have so much excess, they sell it to 7 surrounding countries.

The contracts are actually pretty fair. The people that lose out the most are those that don't get new equipment when eligible. They are still paying the higher monthly fees. Only T-mobile offers off-contract discounted service pricing. I wish that idea would spread. Replacing phones every two years is wasteful.
