You have all read the rumors - now would it make business sense if indeed the rumors are true?

You might ask where I've been lately, and believe me when I say that I've been insanely busy. First with Voodoo things are, shall we say, nuts. We are working to launch a new product line in the very near future. CPU Magazine requested that I write a monthly column, which means I will probably link to each and every column from my blog - but it also means that my time is getting thin.

I also rode with Team Voodoo at the ride for MS this weekend (just a small group of us). We managed to raise some good money for MS research - it was a very well organized event. I'd like to thank all the people who sponsored me for this ride, it won't go unnoticed.

As many readers of my blog have witnessed I have been suggesting that there may be consolodation in the semiconductor space, and I have also said that ATi is a likely candidate for takeover. In my opinion ATi is a jewel that needs some polishing to make it into an amazing company.

I, like all of you, have read the rumors - and I do have an opinion on the potential of AMD and ATi coming together and I will share my opinion in the upcoming issue of CPU Magazine.
In the meantime people have been questioning whether or not I've "switched camps" - and I think you need to realize that I was never in one particular camp. Voodoo has always supported the best technology, that is why up until now we sell 100% AMD on the desktop and workstation, and about 50/50 AMD to Intel on notebooks. People can't expect Intel to remain in this position forever and as such we have been eagerly awaiting the launch of Conroe. I have been testing it, and as I said before it's *!%#ing fast. I honestly believe Intel Conroe is going to revive our industry and kick things into high gear.

I still believe Conroe will be a challenge for Intel to produce in volume so I am a firm believer that Intel will not wage a price war unless they are forced to. It's hard to wage a war when you don't have enough ammunition. ..and to be perfectly honest, Intel may be able to demand a premium for Conroe Extreme so why bother discounting it?

Regarding AMD in Dell, I don't believe AMD will allow Dell to cherry pick only the top end Opteron for their portfolio. It is my belief that Dell will launch more AMD, including Turion and Athlon 64 in the near future. So that's it for my random babble, I'll be back soon - and be sure to check out the next edition of CPU - it should be interesting.

I, too, have an opinion on this matter. But I just won't tell you. This information is too "hot" for a mere comment post.

But I decided to create this comment to discuss the undeniable truth that I do indeed have said opinion regarding ATI-AMD, and that you should go out of your way to find out what my opinion is. :-P

Just pokin' fun. Interested to see what turns out...

lol

But youknow, ati is the amd compared to intel and nvidia, and i'm not talking performance wise (though with conroe, my previous statement might be true afterall), certainly the image they both have, the underdogs of technology so it seems.

Yeah yeah, why don't you guys offer up an opinion - think about the possibilities!

AMD and Dell , ATI and AMD , AMD price war

I don't think Intel needs to go into a price war when Intel's upcoming mainstream CPU like Intel Core 2 E6600 that should have the performance to keep up with the mighty AMD FX 62 at fraction of the cost. E6600 should be like what Opteron 165 is to AMD if Intel can keep up with the supply.

I don't really get why Dell would announce AMD support at this time when Intel is just about to release its next gen line of CPUs.

If AMD were to buy ATI then I wonder what would happen to ATI Motherboard and Crossfire segments.

Will AMD get Crossfire exclusivity?
What will happen to ATI motherboard market sector?
What will happen to ATI and Intel Relationship?
How will NVIDIA react?
So on...

I don't really see anything good coming out of AMD buying ATI because it may do more bad for the GPU advancement than good ;(

I knew AMD would do a price drop from the moment I saw those benchmark but it would have been even more if Intel had the supplies needed for keeping up with the demands.

"I don't really get why Dell would announce AMD support at this time when Intel is just about to release its next gen line of CPUs. "

That's cos they want Intel to give em lower price...or else!

Benefit?

What would be the benefit of such a merger?

-Semi-Conductor access to AMDs FABs so no more outsourcing? This would take a lot of money I would think to chang the Fabs over to GPU production.

Also if there is going to be a merger then why is ATI releasing a Intel RD600 mainboard and the Intel 975x is listed as "Crossfire ready"?

ATI + AMD?
By Trisped on 6/14/2006 3:19:56 PM , Rating: 2
You call your blog subject "ATi + AMD Does It Make Sense?" Yet you spend only one paragraph talking about it, and even then you don't do anything more then state that it is a rumor and that you have been thinking that, "I have been suggesting that there may be consolodation in the semiconductor space, and I have also said that ATi is a likely candidate for takeover."

So what? Are you just shamelessly promoting your upcoming article? Why don't you wait till it is actually out before getting everyone excited over it.

PS If you run your posts through Word before submitting them you would catch such spelling errors as “ATi” and “consolidation.”
