Sony announces the followup to the TX2

Sony has released an update to its ultra-portable VAIO TX2 series notebooks. The new VAIO TX3 series forgoes the previous model's ULV Pentium-M processors and replaces them with new Core Solo (1.06GHz, 1.2GHz) and Celeron-M processors (1.06GHz).

Not much else has changed physically and the new TX3 shares the same 11.1" LED backlight display. 512MB of memory is standard (up to 1.5GB supported) along with a Super-Multi DVD burner, 40/60/80GB hard drive options, two USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire port, 802.11a/b/g wireless, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, fingerprint scanner and a 3-in-1 media reader. Interestingly enough, the new TX3 series sports a standard PCMCIA Type-II slot for expansion instead of the newer ExpressCard/54 interface. The VGN-TX72B/B model even comes with an OneSeg digital TV tuner complete with iEPG programming guide.

The 2.8 pound notebooks have a battery life of up to 10 hours with the standard battery and Core Solo processor (up from 8 hours on the TX2), and 7 hours with the 1.06GHz Celeron-M. The VAIO TX3 series will be available in premium blue, black, white and pink. Engadget states that the new models will launch shortly in Japan at around $2,000 USD. The new TX3’s should be showing up in the United States shortly as the FCC listing has already appeared online.

One thing to note regarding the new VAIO TX3 is the aforementioned 11.1” LED backlit screen. While talking to with Asustek’s mobile division at Computex, we inquired as to why the company’s new leather-clad 11.1” S6F didn’t have an LED backlit display like the tiny VAIOs. The engineer’s response was that there have been issues with the screens breaking on the VAIO TX notebooks due to lack of adequate protection. While LEDs allow the lid to be much thinner than a traditional LCD screen, it also makes it more susceptible to damage.

So called "tech news" bought and paid for by your local corporation. The government does the same thing for some Iraq "news". Its produced by publicity companies, not actual news organizations.

Personally, I find it amazing that a sony notebook randomly gets front page attention at anandtech. Put ads where ads belong stop disguising them as news.

You're being slow my friend. It has nothing to do with being pro, or anti-anything. It has everything to do with being paid money to advertise a product in the guise of news. There is no allegiance. I can assure you that its a far more common occurence than you realize. I once worked for a guy that hired a publicity company which got a full-page "story" about the company in the newspaper. It was full of all kinds of happy go-lucky bullshit about the company. Pretty sad really.

I can assure you DailyTech doesn't do that kind of thing. In fact, if a company approached us with an offer like that, we'd get more hits by publishing the memo than actually publishing the the fake news.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but we don't do things as you suggest.


I'm disappointed

I'm still using my VAIO NE600Z. The ultra-super-slim model already 5+ years old. (P3-650!, ZX chipset... cutdown laptop version of BX, max 256mb!).

AND I WANT TO UPGRADE

But for the last years, the major faults with SONY are:

1./ That silly ultra reflective screen. I don't care for "uber-blacks" that are incy-wincy bit darker IF the price for that feature is a shiney reflective screen that you can use for putting on your make-up.

2./ That silly ATARI 1980 style keyboard buttons. What are they smoking?

3./ Way to many buttons on the outstide of the case. Super stylish means super elegant means no extra buttons, spinners, whizzers, LCD's etc.

4./ Inconsistent model naming and availability in different countries means its impossible to really know what you are buying and also to find reviews on the product (talking from a European perspective)

5./ Credibiliy damage. While the "2000" VAIO's were the corporate executive's machines, the current branding of SONY has been dumbed down... lost its exclusivity and lost its brand credibility due to all these proprietary format issues.

Someone at SONY, please get back to basics!

They didn't mention the fingerprint scanner though.


LED LCD

I dunno if the ASUS guys were just blowing steam, or what. But i doubt they were saying the whole story.


I was at Fry's electronics, playing with the Sony TX LCD, and I was very impressed. I was able to bend the physical screen about 20 degrees, with no problem. Seemed very durable to me.

Usually, the LCD's have some sort of magnesiem alloy backing to help protect the LCD. Sony obviously decided to go thin vs protection, but that is no fault of the LED display.

Still seemed pretty darn sturdy to me.

Why are Sony still bothering releasing PCs, when they no longer serve any useful purpose? As they themselves said "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC."

Vaio tx3 and what's next?

Thanks for the news about the Sony Vaio TX3. Important info. (Forget about the "ad" stuff; this was important news and so what if there was an "ad" side effect?! Who really cares?!)

My question is about the further progression and development of the TX series: Will there be a new TX model with Dual Core later this fall? What is the possibility (technologically speaking) for such a launch?

Hi,

i am looking for an ultra light laptop to take with me in a backpack. I want to use the laptop to edit my digital pictures and to maintain my website while on the road. Software i want to use on the laptop:
- Macromedia suite (dreamweaver, flash, fireworks)
- Photoshop
- Office

Besides that i need a dvd burner for archiving photo's.

That the reason i am seriously looking for the Vaio TX3. Does it suit? Is the performance ok for this software? Any alternative laptop's?

Any advice is appreciated.
