Cadillac ELR production will begin in late 2013
General Motors (GM) announced that it plans to build the Cadillac ELR luxury coupe in the Motor City.
The Cadillac ELR, which is a two-door, plug-in hybrid sports car that is based off of the Converj concept vehicle, will be built at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant in Michigan. This will be a $35 million investment that will bump total product investment to $561 million.
"The ELR will be in a class by itself, further proof of our commitment to electric vehicles and advanced technology," said Mark Reuss, General Motors North America President. "People will instantly recognize it as a Cadillac by its distinctive, signature look and true-to-concept exterior design."
The Cadillac Converj concept vehicle was first unveiled at the 2009 North American International Auto Show. The ELR, which is the production model, will feature an electric drive unit, a T-shaped lithium ion battery and a four-cylinder engine-operator.
GM said the move wouldn't add any extra jobs to the Detroit plant, but the company may reveal the ELR at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.
Cadillac ELR production will begin in late 2013. The expected MSRP for the ELR is around $60,000.
