Apple looks to tackle all of the latest low-cost tablets entering the market
no secret that Apple is set to lower the price of entry for the iPad
with the introduction of the
new iPad mini
. Well, the company today confirmed that it has "a little more to show you" next Tuesday.
The iPad mini is expected to feature a 7.85" display with a rather lackluster screen resolution of 1024x768. This screen resolution is the same as the original iPad and the iPad 2, but well below the 2048x1536 of the "New iPad". By sticking with 1024x768, Apple is ensuring that the iPad mini will be compatible with the full library of iPad apps without creating additional fragmentation.
, there are 24 different configurations for the iPad mini (two colors, Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + LTE, two carriers, and three different storage capacities).
Not much else is known about the iPad mini, but we can expect front- and rear-facing cameras, a
Lightning dock connector
, and a much lighter device overall compared to the hefty 1.44 pound New iPad. The battery capacity for the iPad mini is reportedly 16.7 watt-hours. This compares to 5.45, 24, and 42.5 watt-hours for the iPhone 5, iPad 2, and New iPad respectively.
There is little doubt that Apple is likely to have another hit on its hands with the iPad mini, as its customers are a very loyal bunch. This is despite that fact that companies like
Barnes and Noble
offer tablets with higher resolutions screens.

That's the only thing I'm really curious about. I didn't realize the new iPod touch starts at $299 now. The iPad 2 is $399. Where are they going to fit in a mini-iPad without cannibalizing the sales of the iPod touch or the iPad 2?
The only price points I can imagine are $299 or $349 but neither price point makes much sense to me. At $299 why would anyone buy an iPod touch? At $349 why would anyone buy an iPad mini, iPad 2 is $50 more. If Apple really wanted to scare Amazon and Asus they would price this thing at $249 but that doesn't seem realistic.

Apple has had no problems throwing existing products under the bus to make way for new ones. Look at that they did with prior iPod lines, dropping their most successful iPod at that point, the iPod mini, for the iPod nano only a year later. With the iPhone they completely threw the iPod under the bus, and the proof is in sales as the iPod has declined steadily year after year. Of course, it was worth it since the iPhone alone makes more revenue than all of Microsoft at this point.
It'll happen with the iPod Touch as well. If the market decides that a 7' iPad is more desirable than an iPod Touch, the Touch will fall by the wayside, and Apple has no problem with that. They've done it so many times before.
