GM opens second new IT Innovation Center
General Motors has announced that it is opening a new IT Innovation Center in Warren, Michigan. The center will hire up to 1,500 high-tech workers over the next several years to help GM bolster its IT services. The Michigan Innovation Center is the second of four planned Innovation Centers be located around the United States.
GM launched a similar center in Austin, Texas
creating 500 new IT jobs in the area.
These IT Innovation Centers are critical to GM's overall business IT strategy. The automaker is looking to create and deliver its own IT services with new capabilities to help improve performance and drive down the cost of operations. To help support its plans for reducing costs, General Motors is moving to in-sourced IT business service models.
“GM is executing an IT best practice by in-sourcing IT services and making them a strategic part of assuring GM remains a fast-moving leader,” said Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group in San Jose, Calif. “This is also one of the best opportunities for IT professionals to work in the automotive industry.”

They could put it in Raleigh, NC and have a fresh pool of NC State grads. RTP is pretty much Silicon Valley East.

Never happen. Politics is driving this. "Auto" work is done in Michigan.
Putting it in Texas or NC or any other 'non-union' state would have been a huge no go.
Think along the lines of Boeing and the SC 787 plant.

Agreed RTP is one of the areas where Tech companies were trying to get me to move to and a few of my tech friends landed. Even stole a few people from trying Texas which is surprising given the cost/income ratio there.
I landed in Charlotte (aka New Atlanta, or South New York).
Just felt there was more going on here for me than RTP.
