Apple suggests holding it differently or shielding the lens with your hand

If you've ever seen a purple haze or spot on your iPhone images/videos, Apple has offered an explanation -- you're holding it wrong.

IPhone 5 users have complained that a purple haze or a purple spot has shown up on videos and still images from out-of-scene bright light sources. According to Apple, the cause is the position of the light source and can be fixed by simply holding the phone at a different angle.

Apple's explanation and solution for the Jimi Hendrix effect is as follows:

Most small cameras, including those in every generation of iPhone, may exhibit some form of flare at the edge of the frame when capturing an image with out-of-scene light sources. This can happen when a light source is positioned at an angle (usually just outside the field of view) so that it causes a reflection off the surfaces inside the camera module and onto the camera sensor. Moving the camera slightly to change the position at which the bright light is entering the lens, or shielding the lens with your hand, should minimize or eliminate the effect.

Apple's iPhone has had some issues lately, namely with iOS 6 and its new maps application. Apple also ran into some trouble with iOS 6's clock feature, which was allegedly copied from Swiss Federal Railways

Most small cameras, eh?

But not their own iphone 4 camera. Objectively false comments towards customers like that should be illegal.

If that were illegal years ago, Apple wouldnt have survived LOL.

I am not sure what you are trying to prove here Tony... This is an issue reported by a great deal of iPhone 5 owners. That is all I have said about it and all I have to say about it. Not sure what "reality" that breaks.

I was hoping that article would be a bit more interesting.. Of course; aspherical distortion, lens flare, and corona effects (such as the given example in your article) have been common in camera lens since the beginning; often being used to create dramatic effects in the days before digital cameras bled all of the skill out of the industry.

But this is not your standard optical distortion; and can obviously only be caused by lens coatings (such as the scratch-proof sapphire coating on the iP5's camera) or problems with the image processing.

Of course, this can easily be fixed by shading the lens or picking a different angle (as photographers have been doing for decades) -- but given the photographic skill of most Apple users, you can't be surprised that this didn't occur to them especially given the fact that they are already composing a shot where the light source is behind the subject.

The article would have been a great read had they at the very least had a gallery of several test shots taken by each smartphone they claimed to have tested, so we don't just have to take their word for it . Otherwise, they exude a journalistic caliber even our good friend Jason Mick easily surpasses..

For most casual photographers, the goal of taking a picture is to capture a moment the way you are seeing at that moment in time. In the sample photo, the sun glare is expected, but the purple coloring is not. Your eyes would take in the sun glare and produce a similar flare, but it doesn't turn purple.

As an aside, your tone suggests you are a bore, good sir. :) People take pictures for their own enjoyment.

Very predictable response...

Well, instead of trying to fix this. They said such things to extricate themselves of responsibilities but damage has already being done. By now, enough people realised that this model has a dysfunctional camera in some conditions due to lens flare which is related to the design/build process. Any sane person looking at the cause of this will derive at the correct conclusion of "design flaw".

True that it is not so bad for some people. For many, it is a big annoyance enough to make them stop using the camera ....

my wife's friend just bought the iPhone5 and is extremely unsatisfied with it. My wife and her friend do a lot of scrap booking and the camera is very important. This purple haze issue is the straw that broke the camels back for her she is returning the iPhone. Yeah all small camera's may have this issue according to Apple but oddly enough we don't see it in other devices but this version of the iPhone.

We won't mention how she is missing 4 to 6 calls a day and the phone is on and with her with at least 75% of her bars :). Her carrier is Verizon. Then wife has Verizon and does not have this issue. She has a LG phone.

How much of your own koolaid are you drinking?

It's iPhone5 owners, aka people who OWN and have BOUGHT the iPhone5, who are lodging the complaint.

"More people complaining about products they don't own and don't intend to buy. What a strange thing to do."

Uhhh. Tony, you do realize that this issue was reported by iPhone 5 owners correct? It wasn't made up by those of us that know better than to buy Apple's crap.

I don't hate Apple Tony, I hate you and the ridiculous lies you spread on my favorite site that has been my start page for 12 years (I access DT through AT).

As for this issue, since you are all over any and every article having anything to do with Apple or a direct competitor, you should notice I haven't said anything about the purple issue. The thing I said above was simple shutting down your spin cycle by saying this isn't a fake issue invented by haters, it is a real issue reported by iPhone 5 users you blithering dip. Now take your silly little bias and for whatever unknown reason love for a company (WTF?) and log off, sign back in as one of your aliases and post more biased tripe... Really, do you think you are swaying anyone's opinions with your campaign? The very thought of your campaign bring into question your motives here, but that is a separate debate on an issue that you will never fess up to. _

I never said you were paid, I am just questioning your motives. You are here almost daily defending Apple, every product and every move they make, and you do it in a very biased manor. What exactly is your motive to do this for a company? And for the sake of argument, let's just pretend that isn't odd enough to do for a company (and believe me it is odd) why a company as undeserving as Apple?

LOL, and I find this part VERY curious....

I said: "Really, do you think you are swaying anyone's opinions with your campaign? The very thought of your campaign bring into question your motives here, but that is a separate debate on an issue that you will never fess up to."

Tony replies: "not another egotistical tit who thinks the only people who might have the audacity to disagree with them must be some sort of paid stooge."

Funny that he jumped to being a paid stooge when I didnt bring it up. I was just thinking he is some over-zealous Apple fan, and he is jumping out saying "I am not a paid employee" LOL.

NOW I am not so sure.

It is kind of hard to believe anyone would have such a hard on for a company. I mean, they do make quality products, I see why some people like them and buy them, but to spend so much time online defending every action the company takes and every product they make and skewing things to make that company appear in a better light just makes no sense to me. I love my Android phone and Nexus 7, but I certainly don't take time to defend anything and everything Google does. I couldn't care less about Google, or Samsung, or any of them. If something better comes along, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. You'd think even an idiot with no life whatsoever would still find better things to do.

Hey, Tony, let's give it a rest, okay?

For whatever reasons, you REALLY like Apple. Fine.

I worked for Apple back in the early days of Mac, for four years. A glorious time, full of excitement and the deeply-held belief of all of us that we were really blazing new trails and standing up to the Big Brother enemy in the 1984 commercial.

But now it appears to me that Apple has morphed into that Big Brother on the giant screen in that commercial, with iZombies sitting in rapt attention. Lousy antenna? You're holding it wrong. Purple flare? Keep the sun from hitting the lens. Never mind that other phones don't have these issues.

So while I appreciate the coolness that Apple designs into its products, let's try to be objective, too.

As for converting one side to the other, I'm afraid it would be like a Jew trying to argue with a Mormon or a Muslim. Argue all you want; ain't gonna happen.

BTW I enjoy some of your comments. "...Spurious, vacuous flatulent and pompous..." Pretty good writing, actually. Seriously.

I'm not a big fan of Apple, but I do hope they fix the issue. My shop has a mix of Droids and iPhones (different models) with various carriers. We need both devices working fully.

You spend an awfully lot of time into the replies on the site.

What do you get back in return?
