Xbox Music will be a free streaming service supported by advertisements

Microsoft announced that Windows 8 will have a launch partner on the 26th -- an Xbox Music service.

According to Microsoft, the new service will be a free streaming service supported by advertisements. The Verge noted that it's similar to Spotify.

Xbox Music will be integrated with Microsoft's SkyDrive cloud service, where users will be able to store their music and playlists, then access them from various devices.

Initially, Xbox Music will be available on Xbox 360, Windows 8 and Windows Phone. Xbox 360 users can expect a dashboard update to support the new music service in the coming weeks.

Xbox Music will eventually have iOS and Android apps as well, but they won't be available at launch.

Xbox Music was originally announced in June of this year as a replacement for Zune, but The Verge notes that the existing Zune Pass subscription offering will still be available along with Xbox Music.

Xbox Music will be released alongside Windows 8 on October 26.

Been an Android user since the Nexus One. However, the Win8 tabler + phone (possibly Windows Surface phone?) and now this is making me thing about moving my lot to the MS field.

Only reason i like my windows phone is because of zune music pass. Very satisfied, gonna move to an HTC8X with beats headphone by christmas.

If there isn't any extra charge, the $5 for Xbox live would suddenly become worth it if you're also getting the music thrown in.

Did yall read the article? Its free / ad supported, identical to spotify and pandora. Its on windows 8 and windows phone 8, so a xbox live account will obviously not be required. They will also continue to sell their "zune pass" under a new name which is unlimited music for a monthly fee.
