Musician destroyed Microsoft computers then proceeded to turn his aggression on store employees with cocky freestyle

Richard Colson Barker, alias MGK ("Machine Gun Kelly"), comes with some pretty impressive "cred".  He rose to fame/infamy via winning rap battles at the Apollo Theater and was recently named MTV's Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011.

Seeing as MGK's mix tapes were burning up the underground, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) salivated at the chance to win "street-cred" and joined hip-hop magazine The Source to hold a special event at the Atlanta, Georgia Microsoft Store.  Past events with artists such as Flo Rida (who performed at the Microsoft Store in Orlando) had gone well.  This event did not.

MGK felt compelled to take his performance up a notch by jumping onto tables in the store, stomping around and destroying a number of laptops.  The distraught Microsoft Store employees tried to plead with their guest to stop and cut his mic.

But that only egged on and provoked MGK further as shocked/amused onlookers watched and recorded the incident.

Warning: Video contains strong language and may be inappropriate for children.

Addressing the store employees he offered them a bit of Shakespeare-caliber freestyle poetry, commenting, "Suck my [redacted], I'm up in this mother[redacted]. MGK in this [redacted]. [Redacted] these computers."

In the aftermath Microsoft distanced itself from the incident, saying it didn't hire MGK.  But it did invite him inside.  Microsoft was hoping for attention, clearly, by the guest event, but that hope was soon extinguished when a cocky MGK ditched the script.

Sad state of society

The sad part of all this is that people actually listen to this trash and this jackass actually makes a living doing it.

Even from this failed event he will make a buttload of money.

And to think I have to slave away 10-12 hrs a day to make my pittance.

I wonder if I got up on the meeting table, dropped my pants to the point where half my buttcrack showed, waved my arms around like a monkey, cussed out everyone in the room to a beat and stomped all over their computers they will pay me more?

I would be saying the same thing if I were them.

What more needs to happen or not before someone realizes Microsoft has the worst Marketing team of any major corporation?

Microsoft would be better off firing the Marketing team and whatever they spend on Marketing/Advertising and just hand out that much in free devices. With social networking the word would get out there much better than the Marketing team at Microsoft can ever try to convince you to buy or use the product.

They didn't hire him

If someone asks you to do a job, which you understand includes remuneration, and then when you arrive to do the job you discover there isn't any remuneration, you do understandably feel cheated. Without trying to guess MGK's motives, someone should have been prepared to pay him. I would have thought that Microsoft should have been paying (as in "handing over of money", not as in "free Microsoft software with retail values that amount to $xxx") at least part of his fee on the grounds their name and products were supposed to be promoted by him.
I do feel sorry for those involved in hiring him because some of them would have risked a lot to do to it, and now that has backfired so badly they could loose their jobs.

I disagree. Trash like this is not needed in society, it is tasteless and to people in the Music professions (Composers, singers, musicians) this sort of nonsense only serves to further tarnish the reputation of real music.

I'm inclined to agree. But I'll bet our parents said the same thing about the bands we liked when we were kids.

This /\

In the 50's Elvis was decried as being too sexual and suggestive for shaking his hips. Today he's an icon. I'm not comparing this idiot to Elvis but rather an older generations view of certain types modern music.

Don't take this wrong... But RAP isn't so much a type of "Music" as it is a combination of bad poetry and performance art. Now it is similar to what some Bards did in the past. Still it fails in that comparison because the accompaniment is less lyrical.

Oh and comparing Elvis to RAP is ludicrous.

I Agree. The only reason this kind of 'music' has become so widespread, is because it is so easy to produce, meaning that big record labels/the music industry, can make lots of money with little effort. All they need to do is to heavily promote the artist through radio and tv, and then the money start rolling in (from the 13-23 age segment).

Uh, I don't think anyone (ok, the more credible ones) are saying rap across the board sucks or whatever. I like it myself.

However, this guys behavior I think is what everyone refers to as being trashy. Hard to argue against that, even for a devil's advocate like myself.

Basically, they guy was pretty disrespectful and also WTF MS for even allowing it. It honestly makes no sense from a marketting perspective, at least pick an artist that has a more general appeal.

I guess they got what they paid for, minus the equipment loss. Very funny from the outside looking in though hahaha

There's rap and then there is cussing out a crowd to a beat. You are referring to the latter as music or creativity?

Exactly where is the creativity on climbing on a table, jumping around like a spastic hyena and yelling "F**K you motherf**ker! Don't like it suck my ****" while you stomp all over and destroy a store's merchandise?

I really don't see it, yet there are some out there that like this kind of crap and will make this goofball tons of money by buying his *ehrm* music.

As I said, society is in a sad state when someone pulling this kind of crap can make money doing it from the few people just like you.

No you're just one of those in society like the millions of us that know we're not owed anything and have to actually work hard to take care of ourselves and our families.

Artists, especially musicians, often don't make a lot of money. This guy probably lives with his parents or off his family in some way, and what little money he'll make off this stunt will go into his next album. And then he'll be broke again, because that's just the way that world is. The girls are good though. Only the mega stars 'hit the lottery' so to speak.

I honestly wish more kids knew what I knew about artists, the entire entertainment industry would collapse.

There are many musicians making good money who are not stars. If you're a good musician, there are all sorts of ways to make good money and enjoy a great living:

1. Contracts for regular gigs (bars, coffee houses, clubs, etc.)
2. Events (weddings, schools, conferences)
3. Giving private or class lessons
4. Television shows and commercial scores
5. Studio musicians
6. Self-publishing

By good money I mean around $75K-100K/year and you get to do what you love. I know a couple of people that do one or more of the above for their full-time job and make good money.

To be blunt, I would not call this guy an artist.

Agreed that there are many good rappers out there that deserve their fame and riches. Then there are the outta control gangsta wannabes like this guy that really should not have given up his day job.

Even still u-tube will give this guy his publicity (the who reason for his prank) and he will reap the monetary rewards from it from the gangsta rap fans out there.

Microsoft, visual studio, office, sql, windows, skype, and about a million other cool technologies. Don't ever hate on MS, they are the grandaddy of tech. Respect your roots people, they made this all possible. They even propped up your beloved Apple and those two companies do not fight, they have what's called RESPECT among titans!

No, his "career" is done. No one is going to hire him to do anything ever again. What some of these guys forget is who really runs these things. Piss off a large corporation and you'll be cleaning latrines for the rest of your life.

By Camikazi on 10/4/2012 6:50:26 PM , Rating: 2
Sadly this won't hurt his carreer at all since his type of "rapper" (I love rap but I mean real rap not what MGK does BTW) grows bigger with this type of publicity. It will only increases his "cred" with his fans (mostly kids just like him) and make him kewler for it.

By flubaluba on 10/8/2012 3:21:30 PM , Rating: 2
He will be blacklisted and will not be able to get gig's and probably end up working at Burger King or MacDonald's. Why would you destroy your career making yourself looks so silly when everyone knows it is just a stunt to make money, I thought rappers were supposed to reject society and all of the greed that goes with it. LOL

MS you seriously need to fire your entire marketing department and find people who actually know what the hell they are going and can control the events they setup.

How exactly did MS Stores fail? I don't remember them having to cut people from their stores.

Intel Ultra Books - This is like saying that Exxon failed cause Chevy sucks. Yes, you can use windows with an ultra book, but it was an INTEL product, not MS.

As for marketing, one of the key aspects of marketing is there is no bad publicity especially if you are marketing yourself as a "Bad @$$." And if you think I'm in error, his antics has made you either post or read about them so he has achieved his goal.

with tens of billions of dollars in cash in the bank, do you really thing Microsoft is sweating some computers a rapper smashes up? I doubt they have enough inventory in the entire store to cause anyone to start sweating at Microsoft.

That type of marketing is very regional, I certainly don't get it but I'm gonna guess folks there may have.
