For many people, especially in these economically tough times a $100 more is a big deal. In addition unless all you do is run benchmarks all day long, spending $100 more on an i5 may net you nothing of value at all - depending on what you use your PC for. That's why it's nice to have many options to meet all consumer needs.

The price of the case, mobo, RAM, etc. is going to be similar in price to those for an i3/i5 and in some cases actually cheaper with the AMD hardware over Intel.

The bottom line is buy what makes you happy - if you have the $$$. Most people will be perfectly happy with the Trinity APUs because it's all they need. If you need more and have the cash, then buy an i5 if that's what makes you happy.

It's worth noting that the FM2 mobo socket design is fixed for the next several years so all the updated AMD APUs will plug right in unlike Intel that changes sockets all the time, thus requiring a new mobo at the minimum.
