SBB is reportedly looking to make a deal with Apple, where the railway company will likely seek a licensing fee

They say "what goes around, comes around" -- and it looks like Apple is finally getting a dose of its own medicine in the patent infringement department.

A railway company in Switzerland, called Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), has accused Apple of copying its clock design for iOS 6. SBB said its company created that clock design back in 1944, and that Apple's new iOS 6 clock app is identical. See for yourself:

"We are proud that this icon of clock design is being used by a globally successful company," said Reto Kormann, SBB spokesperson. "We've approached Apple and told them that the rights for this clock belong to us."

SBB is reportedly looking to make a deal with Apple, where the railway company will likely seek a licensing fee.

Apple just released iOS 6 two days ago, and also launched its iPhone 5 in eight countries today.

SBB's move against Apple comes at an interesting time. After a 1+ year-long battle with Samsung over smartphone/tablet patent infringement lawsuits around the globe, a U.S. jury found Samsung guilty of copying the iPhone/iPad for its Galaxy line. Not only was Samsung ordered to pay $1.05 billion USD in damages, but a court date on December 6 may lead to more product bans for the South Korean electronics maker. Apple is also looking to boost that $1.05 billion fine to $3 billion.

I mean it a freaking clock design.
What do they want $1 from each phone? Will that make them happy? Or do they just want Apple to say - yep we stole your design. Couldn't they just have come up with it on their own. Hell anyone could have come up with it. Who knew it was designed before?

It just makes me shake my head and go to the next stupud news story.

Yup. Time for Apple to sow what it has reaped.

I think all companies that Apple has "borrowed" from should take the following stance:

We will take a very minimal licence fee as long as you put our logo on the iPhone

Before too long, the iphones will look like nascars, and people will really see how pioneering apple designers really are

Nah, then Apple will just proclaim that they invented "sponsorship" and they'll start suing NASCAR et al for the concept of putting sponsor stickers on things.

And all of the Apple consumers will believe them.

Considering it is a registered trademark and easy to look up, has been licensed and used by Mondaine and well known all over Switzerland and other parts of the world (even I knew it was not a random design) I say they knew it was designed already and like all other things they just ignored it and took it anyway. Either way Apple did start this by suing over trivial little designs that anyone can come up with, time for them to see what it feels like to be on the other side.

They will probably pay SBB as a PR move and then change the design for 6.1 and add some improvements along the way.

I feel the same way about the rectangle with rounded corners bit too, just in case you were wondering.
