There are 250GB and 500GB versions that will be released throughout the fall

Sony announced that it will release another redesigned version of its PlayStation 3 console before the end of the year.

The latest PS3 console will be available in either 250GB and 500GB bundles. The 250GB bundle will come in either black or white and will have "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception" Game of the Year Edition included. The price tag is set at $269.99.

For those more interested in the 500GB model, it will come in black only alongside the "Assassin's Creed III" release. A price for this bundle hasnt been announced yet.

So what's the redesign exactly? The upcoming PS3 will be 25 percent slimmer than the last redesign, and will be a full 50 percent slimmer than the original PS3.

The black 250GB bundle will be available on September 25 while the white version will be released November 22. The black 500GB PS3 will hit store shelves October 30.

I've still got the fat PS3. It works fine, why upgrade?

The fat PS3's fans sounds like a jet engine compared to the slim PS3's fans. If you're watching Netflix in your living room it's a significant factor.

My PS3 is sitting in an entertainment shelf right next to my subwoofer. I don't hear a thing :)

The huge advantage of the original PS3 nobody seems to talk about is the PS2 compatibility in hardware and very easy hard disk (even SSD) upgradability.

They're also pretty reliable, especially in comparison to the Xenon, Jasper and even Falcon XBOX 360's famous for their RROD.

Sony did it right the first time, now they're just trying to make it cheaper and use less power.

The slim PS3 is even easier for HDD and SSD upgrades. It's just one blue Phillips screw.

"Upgrade" being used very loosely.

Neither the new or old "slim" have the same functionality as the original - PS2 compatibility being the biggest omission.

Also this new slim device is a top load unit instead of a slot load like the previous models. Because of that it may not be as convenient in many entertainment centers. The BR-ROM drive is also said to be louder than the previous model due to the redesign of the disk loading.

If it sold for $199 I might be tempted to pick one up. At $270 it still feels a bit too pricey.

And WTF with no HDMI cable in the box?? This is 2012.
