Next generation IS to get a hybrid variant
Lexus' current generation IS family is getting rather long in the tooth. The second generation IS was introduced in 2005 as a 2006 model, and has soldiered on with minor updates throughout its lifespan. While it was first introduced as a four-door sedan (2.5- and 3.5-liter V6, 5.0-liter V8), a hardtop convertible model was added a few years into its product cycle.
Now, Lexus is ready to fully revamp is entry-level sports sedan and it will feature the latest evolution of the L-finesse design language seen on the 2013 Lexus GS and 2013 Lexus ES courtesy of the LF-CC Concept. As a result, the third generation IS will become the latest model to sport the new "Predator" grille (Lexus actually calls it a "Spindle" grille, but there's no fun in that). The huge, gaping maw definitely isn't for everyone, but it's hard to fault the rest of the design of the sleek, two-door coupe.
When it comes to the powertrain, we're sure that the 3.5-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 engines will carry over relatively untouched, but a new hybrid model appears to be on the table. The IS Hybrid (we're guessing IS 300h) will use a longitudinally-mounted version of the 2.5-liter inline-4 used in the ES 300h. The engine uses the Atkinson Cycle and D-4S direct injection technology used on the Scion FR-S.
It's doubtful that the IS 300h will reach the lofty 40/39 (city/highway) efficiency ratings of the ES 300h, but it should absolutely blow away the current IS 250 which is only rated at 19/28 (city/highway).
