Thanks to the successful run of its first Mini, Google makes available two new flavors of its search-engine-in-a-box

Google has revealed two new models of its increasingly popular Google Mini, the company's small-business search appliance. The new Minis will be available in two options: a unit that can search 200,000 documents for $5,995 and a flagship model that will sift through 300,000 documents for $8,995.

The original Mini, which can handle 100,000 documents is still available for sale at $2,995. Google says:

The Google Mini can provide search for up to 300,000 documents, and it supports over 220 different file types. The price includes 1 year of full customer support, software updates, and replacement coverage.

For those that require more however, a super-size Google search appliance is also for sale that can search through 15 million documents. The unit also has advanced features that the Minis don't have such as continuously crawling content for refreshed or updated materials automatically, database indexing, unlimited search collections and a RAID storage array. Unfortunately, you won't be able to purchase this unit through Google's online store.

I wonder how much that 15 million behemoth would cost. Seeing as to how:

200,000 / $5,995 = 33.36
300,000 / $8,995 = 33.35
...
15,000,000 / 33.35 = $449,775

I'll take 10!

Anandtech installed one of the original Google minis several months ago. http://www.anandtech.com/IT/showdoc.aspx?i=2523
In typical Anandtech fashion, they pulled the whole thing apart.

Yup. I would assume that the new models have been upgraded from a P3 CPU to a P4 now, which would account for the ability to search a large document set. Try out the AnandTech search feature, though: since the upgrade in September, it has become FAR more useful!

I wonder...

Does google basically just sell the alorithm? I fail to see how a single executable could be useful to such a diverse market. These things must be customizable to some point, no?
