iPhone 5 becomes the fastest selling iPhone ever

It will come as no surprise that Apple’s iPhone 5 has proven to be insanely successful only a few days after it was officially announced. AT&T has announced that the iPhone 5 set a sales record over the weekend making it the fastest selling iPhone AT&T has ever offered.
 
AT&T reports that customers ordered more iPhones from AT&T than any previous model both on its first day of pre-orders and over the weekend. And although AT&T didn't divulge actual sales numbers, Apple was happy to oblige. The boys from Cupertino announced that over 2 million iPhone 5 smartphones were sold within the first 24 hours of availability -- twice the performance of last year's iPhone 4S.

“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”

 
The iPhone 5 is still available for pre-order on the AT&T network right now and is the only version of the device capable of simultaneous voice and data.
 
While Apple and its carriers are likely celebrating over the big sales numbers, Samsung is already looking to knock the iPhone 5 down a peg or two with new print advertising.

Yet for $5.00 less I can make calls and surf the web using my GS3 on Verizon's network.

I was just stating the price difference, regarding the "overpriced".

In what regards the capabilities of the iPhone 5 in Verizon, as I live in europe, i doesn't affect me.

I am, however, going to buy a smartphone soon, because my 3Gs is really showing it´s age.

I considered the GS3, but i really don't like the feel, size nor the build. I also do not like the feel of the iPhone 4 and 4S. It´s between the Lumia 920 and the iPhone 5 now.

Specs specs specs...you people are the definition of fanboys. Check out anandtech and take note of how the iPhone 5 leaves behind the galaxy 3 in benchmarks. What do you need all those specs for on the G 3 anyway? Angry birds space doesn't look any better and all it's used for is to try and make the bloat ware OS run smoothly, which it doesn't. What apps are there on Android which make use of these high specs? Moving video previews? Video windows? Motion panning when you try to move app between desktops? Useless S Assist? Non-functioning smart stay? At least Apple's added features have use cases and work properly. iPhone owners get iOS6 on day one. How long have we been waiting for Jelly Bean already? The iPhone 5 is built out of machined metal rather than paper thin plastic and it still manages to be thinner and lighter than the G3. Samsung, fire your designers now. You should all be thankful to Apple showing the industry how to innovate and communicate that to the buying public. If it were left to Samsung the mobile industry would slide backwards to how it used to be...filler 'features' that nobody wants or uses more than once.

I stopped considering de GS3 as an option, because it's a big ugly phone (very subjective), and also that plastic feels and looks very cheap.

They sure could spend more on materials and design.

I dropped my galaxy nexus phone getting out of a big rig truck, probably 6 feet. The samsung case is plastic and so crushed and absorbed some of the impact. I'm guessing apple's metal case would have transmitted 100% of the impact force to the glass and would have shattered it. Nope I just wish sumsung would have copied HTC's rubberized plastic case, its by far the most practical.

Well thanks for the spec comparisons.

And some advice: I'd suggest you not make any calls or you'll have to go to 3G for data. Oh wait! iPhone user's are used to that anyway :) And now a half functional LTE phone because of antenna limitations. Andd in this case you'll always be holding it wrong :)

What are you talking about? The A6 has been benching higher performance than faster clocked quad-cores in the latest Android devices. Better GPU performance is a given, iDevices have always led there.

$5 difference for faster hardware that is thinner, lighter, still with great battery life, plus a better selection of apps, better security, and guaranteed OS updates.

What a ripoff!

Better security..? Now that's a good one.. Remember the long standing exploit that allowed 3GS users to jailbreak their phones simply using a website that took advantage of a quicktime vulnerability..? They'd of probably never fixed it if not for hiring the hacker who found the exploit, and imagine how bad it could have been if there were more malware programmers who took advantage at the time..?

Sure, Google has had plenty of their own security problems, mostly caused by oem code, but not near as bad. A fair example would be the results of practically every single hack contest (usually with laptops/pc's) at security conferences.. first to go down is always Apple, second Linux (base for android), and last.. always windows, amazingly enough.

The rest I'll give you, especially design quality.. Samsung went a bit too far making the GS3 look nothing at all like an iPhone, resulting in a cheap feeling plastic-y phone.

how is that 'substandard'? For it to be 'substandard', the standard (majority of phones) would have to be better. Even if you were to argue the Galaxy III is better vs the iPhone 5, the majority of phones out there are terrible.
