AT&T iPhone 5 will support voice and data simultaneously

No matter how you feel about the iPhone 5 that was unveiled this week, it's an interesting smartphone to most people. However, we're learning that the phone can't support cellular data and voice calls at the same time on certain 4G LTE networks.

Specifically, the iPhone 5 will be unable to handle simultaneous voice and data use on Verizon Wireless and Sprint versions of the device. This is due to a limitation in the CDMA specification that those two networks use. However, some 4G LTE smartphones on the Verizon network will allow users to make voice calls and use data connectivity at the same time. The iPhone 5 is unable to do this due to design decisions that Apple made.

“The iPhone 5 is designed to allow customers to make voice calls on the Verizon Wireless network and surf the Web on Wi-Fi,” Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney said in an e-mail. “It was an Apple decision."

The New York Times reports that when users place a voice call while connected to 4G LTE network the phone call the defaults to the carriers older second or third-generation networks because LTE networks can't support voice calls at this time.

The reason AT&T iPhone 5 buyers can place phone calls and use data at the same time is because both of those functions roll back to the older AT&T 3G network, which is capable handling both simultaneously.

And yet, the iPhone 5 pre-orders have sold out.

I was up at 3 AM EST pre-ordering one for my wife. She loves her iPhone, so I can't deny her. Besides, she's been getting my leftovers for years -- she got my old iPhone 3GS and my old iPhone 4.

So I'm made things right by getting her a 16GB iPhone 5 ;)

Do bad for you - it's just a phone.
I'm not standing in line, or getting up early, or waiting online to get a phone!

I have better things to do! And for the record I have not stood in line for any gadget, or tickets, or movie. I don't need to be first.

"And yet, the iPhone 5 pre-orders have sold out."

Not surprising, Apple has made an art of preying off of the uninformed... There are alot of ignorant people in the world. They far outnumber the rest of us.

I think that's being a bit harsh. Some people just may prefer the iPhone.

The Toyota Camry is the best selling car in America. It damn sure isn't the best car in its class, and it isn't even the best value. But it's a decent car with a certain reputation.

I personally wouldn't buy one, but who am I to judge what someone purchases with their own hard-earned money... let alone call them stupid?

If the Camry costs 1/3rd more than everything out there, and Toyota marketed it like it was the Holy Grail of the automotive world, that analogy would have worked better.

Well yes, stupid uninformed people :)

iPhone purchasers have never been known to be tech savoy shoppers comparing the competition. And in this case as the tech press has noted, this iteration is a major let down. But that being said they'll be plenty camped outside waiting for these. And in light of the competition for a highly anticipated tech device, they ARE stupid. And the preorderer even more. Especially now. This is hilarious.

And pls no car analogies. Especially this one which is completely flawed.

Brandon, how can you not call these people "stupid."

Some of them are flat out gushing over the new features they read about on CNN.com when they are looking at a 4S the entire time! They don't even get the fact that the darn screen is the same size...

Note: I own an iPhone and have for 5 years, but so does most everyone in my family and yes, they are quite stupid when it comes to technology.

Ah yes, all those people buying the fastest, best supported, #1 mobile target development platform in the world.

Those poor fools!

Yes, those are the people... The ones who trade off smaller screens, lower res, non HD screen, better OS, better UI, better and faster voice search, flexibility in OS, and hardware, SD card, micro USB, detect as USB flash drive, removable batteries, simultaneous talk and data on CDMA, better GPS/NAv - for slightly better app support. LOL. And they think they are paying for the best feature set LOL.

Like I said - Apple has made an art of preying off of the uninformed... You gotta respect thier business model, just not the products.

By my math... iPhone 5 pre-orders sold out in one hour. iPhone 4s pre-orders sold out in 20 hours and actual sales from those pre-orders was 4 million. So doing the math... 4 million divided by 20 hours = 200,000 units per hour. So I will guess that they had 250,000 units for sale on the high end. I can actually believe that this quantity will sell out in an hour.

There's a ton of rumors that Apple has short supply - rightfully so considering the new silicon dual core cortex A15's inside. The inclusion of the A15's actually surprised many of the 'Apple' folks across the interwebs. Many Apple fans thought there would be A9's or quad A9's given the quantities needed for the iPhone 5. There's just no way that Apple can have millions of these devices already made powered by such a new chip. No Way.

And they didn't!

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6292/iphone-5-a6-not...

Custom Apple SoC. People expected that the only way they could have squeezed that level of performance combined with that battery life and reduced core size was with the Cortex A15. Nobody, Anand included, considered that this could have been custom.

In hindsight this makes sense. I didn't think that Apple could get the volume of A15s that they needed at this time, and obviously they couldn't so they went off with their own optimized version of existing architectures.
