AT&T iPhone 5 will support voice and data simultaneously

No matter how you feel about the iPhone 5 that was unveiled this week, it's an interesting smartphone to most people. However, we're learning that the phone can't support cellular data and voice calls at the same time on certain 4G LTE networks.

Specifically, the iPhone 5 will be unable to handle simultaneous voice and data use on Verizon Wireless and Sprint versions of the device. This is due to a limitation in the CDMA specification that those two networks use. However, some 4G LTE smartphones on the Verizon network will allow users to make voice calls and use data connectivity at the same time. The iPhone 5 is unable to do this due to design decisions that Apple made.

“The iPhone 5 is designed to allow customers to make voice calls on the Verizon Wireless network and surf the Web on Wi-Fi,” Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney said in an e-mail. “It was an Apple decision."

The New York Times reports that when users place a voice call while connected to 4G LTE network the phone call the defaults to the carriers older second or third-generation networks because LTE networks can't support voice calls at this time.

The reason AT&T iPhone 5 buyers can place phone calls and use data at the same time is because both of those functions roll back to the older AT&T 3G network, which is capable handling both simultaneously.

This Phone Fails.

So two years after everyone else has LTE standard and fully functioning, Apple finally joins the fray...

..and they can't even get THAT right.

Yes this phone will sell, yes no-life idiots will still camp outside to buy one, but this phone is beyond underwhelming. It fails, there's no innovation, not even a gimmick like Siri with the 4S launch, an equally underwhelming launch.

Once again Apple is content to rest on their laurels, maximize profit margins, and attempt to sue for protectionism victories instead of having to keep up with Samsung and others.

Welcome to 2010 Apple! We are so glad you could join the retro party. Oh wait...LOL

Yea, I doubt if anyone is really all that surprised by this. Apple has made some half-assed decisions in the past regarding the feature set of their devices, this is just par for the course.

Probably the most amusing part of this is that even on AT&T, it will drop you to 3G data while that 3G voice is running. It can't just drop voice to 3G and leave data at 4G.

Well, to be fair, the features it includes do "just work". Its the things it's missing and the puny non-HD screen that loses it for me.

Hey, add another thing to the Apple copied Android list with Panoramic photos for the camera. Larger Screen and 4G.

Well, to be complete, THERE IS NO 4G VOICE in the world yet. Period. So who went off and designed a "4th Generation" cellular network without including f* voice? This fail happened long before Apple, and when the network is corrected then the iPhone will take advantage of it.

I think you got this backwards oh complete one. If you are on LTE data and you make a call the iPhone drops the DATA connection to 3G.

How's that for your world of phones? Don't worry it will only matter after Apple fixes or adopts this minor feature.

What I love about Apple's impressive PR machine is that many media outlets are hyping up the iPhone 5's 4G / LTE capabilities like it is the first phone ever to support it...

Well as far as they are concerned, it is. 4G LTE is a brand new concept to the Apple camp. They aren't aware of much of the outside world you know.

Just have to wait for the iPhone 5S to fix all the problems, like they did with the 4S to the 4's "deathgrip/your holding it wrong" antenna design.

But you forget that the PR machine has made ANY Apple product a must have. So it matters not that there isn't a good reason to get this new phone, it will sell. that's all that matters.

And maybe I'm in the minority but a bigger screen? It won't fit in my pocket very well. Of course the ones buying this the most probably have their pants hanging off their a$$ anyway so it doesn't matter! Guess that's why I don't have a iphone yet!

Helps if you don't follow the whole "in fashion" skinny jeans.

Personally, I find large screened phones better for watching movies and reading lots of webpage text, plus they fit better in my gorilla hands. :)

It's also good for the old farts whose eyes just aren't what they used to be either.

It will fit in purses quite well. Apple needs to popularize the Man Bag so both genders can carry this item.

Yeah I agree adding 4G/LTE to a phone is so 2010, but Apple knows its customer base and whether the technology updates are marginal or revolutionary, they know Apple fans will gobble this stuff up blindly for the sake of upgrading.

Me personally, I would rather take cell phone network reliability, consistency, and call quality over simultaneous voice & data communication which I don't even do.

Funny article labeled as "opinion". Worth a laugh.

I can sell out pre-orders and hype it through the media but how many units were available for pre-order anyway?

#pathnotfound

Sure they sold out all 100 units available for pre-order.

Big Deal.

I know, the thought that it is absolutely certain that the iPhone 5 is going to sell faster and in bigger numbers than the iPhone 4s send a dark cold chill into your heart. But pretending it's not going to happen won't change anything, it will just make your inevitable encounter with reality even more painful.

Wow you are a sleezy individual. I say "the sky is blue" and you respond with "no, the clouds are still there." Talking to you is like talking to a damned politician. So how many orders has Apple taken in pre-orders? 100? 1000? 10000? Nobody the f--- knows. That was my point. No chills in my heart are needed here please. It's just a phone.

I point is that Apple manipulates these "sell outs" for pre-orders. How do I know this? Simple. They never release the amount of said pre-orders. This is just for more hype on a lame-duck product to convince the simple-minded masses to purchase one.

My response is that you are talking out of your ass. Apple doesn't have to manipulate anything, this product has sold out because of unprecedentedly high demand. I go along with Horace at Aysymco and think his projection of around 6 million iPhones sold for the launch weekend is sound.

This phone is already a monster hit.

The iPhone 5 will be the most successful handset to date.

Get over it.

"Grow up - only a fragile prick thinks that people will only disagree with them if they are paid to do so. What a nob."

I actually dont think you work for Apple. I think you are the even more scary version... A rabid fanboy that just loves the company so freegin much that you cant stand to see anyone with a differing opinion. You love it so much that you feel compelled to go online in your spare time and defend every move they make and every product they release. Seriously. What does any company do that deserves such a devotion? None, and certainly not Apple. I'd rather you were a paid shill, at least that would be understandable. What you are now is just a ridiculous joke. Cant you find anything better to do?

"Hi my name is Tony, and my hobby are going online and defending Apple against any and all nay sayers" Doesnt that strike you as pathetic? Bacause it strikes the rest of us that way.

Funny how you 'magically' know the HIGHEST analyst projection for iPhone 5 sales. You must indeed work for Apple PR.

But doing some math... iPhone 5 pre-orders sold out in one hour. iPhone 4s pre-orders sold out in 20 hours and actual sales from those pre-orders was 4 million. So doing the math... 4 million divided by 20 hours = 200,000 units. So I will guess that they had 250,000 units for sale on the high end. I can actually believe that this quantity will sell out in an hour.

There's a ton of rumors that Apple has short supply - rightfully so considering the new silicon dual core cortex A15's inside. The inclusion of the A15's actually surprised many of the 'Apple' folks across the interwebs. There's just no way that Apple can have millions of these devices powered by such a new chip. No Way.

Now that you are clearly the only one talking out of you ass, you can post whatever Apple tells you to in response to my post.

Meanwhile in the real world AllThings D offers a first week sales estimate for the iPhone 5 of 10 million.

When you are in a hole stop digging. There is abundant evidence of higher demand for this iPhone than previous iPhones and zero evidence that Apple artificially restrains supply in order to create 'sold out' hype that it doesn't need. However much you try to dance around it the iPhone 5 will be the most successful phone launch, and maybe the most successful product launch ever. The only thing that will beat the iPhone 5 in terms of numbers or speed of units sold will be the iPhone 6 next year.

I repeat only a preening puffed up fool thinks that the only people who disagree with him are those paid to do so. I disagree with you because you are wrong: I hope that doesn't crush your ego too much.

Not everyone bases their "facts" on estimates like you. Hell anyone can estimate everything about anything. I estimate that 99.9% of crApple users are complete retards. Although that is a VERY conservative estimation but more than likely 100% fact. See how easy it is to estimate ?

Must have hit a nerve there for you. Care to prove your point? No? Didn't think so. I clearly gave my evidence as to why I believe Apple manipulates the amount of devices to create hype for their newest product. Something you can't do... as your opinions lack any form of logic.

Seriously, why do you care so much if Apple's latest phone is "so awesome." Do you get some sort of self-gratification out of it? **Boggled**

LTE in a phone up until a few months ago meant either no battery life (which was the bulk of Android LTE phones), or using a massive battery which meant making the phones huge (which as a side effect brought about larger displays).

Qualcomm's 28nm LTE chips changed all that, now you can finally get good battery life out of something as small as an iPhone. The alternative solutions would have been to make it omgXBoxhuge, or to have under half the battery life of the prior gen iPhone. Both solutions are bad.

Now they reduced the size of the phone without compromising battery life at all, even when keeping LTE turned on. It isn't rocket science as to why they waited.
