The Concept Active Tourer will be presented at the 2012 Paris Motor Show

BMW plans to introduce its Concept Active Tourer later this month at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, but has finally released some details about the vehicle ahead of time. 
 
The BMW Concept Active Tourer is a plug-in hybrid that could possibly be part of the 1-Series GT family once the production version is released. The Active Tourer is about as long as the most recent 1-Series at 171 inches long, but is five inches taller and four inches wider.
 
The Active Tourer features BMW's new eDrive plug-in hybrid drive system, which consists of a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-three with a lithium-ion electric system. This vehicle has an all-electric driving range of nearly 20 miles, and fuel consumption sits at 2.5 liters per 100 kilometers. The total system output is 190 HP (147 pound/feet of torque). 

 
BMW's latest concept also has some cool interior features, like different display options (8-inch gauge cluster display, head-up display, or 10.25-inch center stack display) and a "Cool Shade" panorama roof, which is a glass roof with Suspended Particle Device (SPD) technology for adjustable opacity via the push of a button. Drivers can also experience special effects in the Cool Shade roof, like a leaf design. 

 
"With the new BMW Concept Active Tourer, BMW presents a vehicle at the 2012 Paris Motor Show which is the first in the premium compact segment to combine comfort and space functionality with dynamic performance and style," said BMW. "Annual growth rates of up to 5 percent are expected in the small car and compact segment of the premium class in the years to come. For this reason, the BMW Concept Active Tourer is a key component in the ongoing development of the BMW brand and its model portfolio." 

 
The 2012 Paris Motor Show will run from September 29 - October 14.

Why not? I have that kind of income and it's always mattered to me. It's just in with the other stuff when I look for a car. Currently in the process of buying (ordering it) a X1 with the new turbo, DI 4 cyl. Acceleration is more than adequate and the 24 city/34 hwy is a biggie for us (car is for the wife). Saving money is not just for the lower income folks, it's just a smart thing to do. How do you think rich people get rich (other than the hand me down wealthy people)? Read the Millionaire Next Door. TONS of wealthy people out there that are NOT driving Bentleys.

If I was looking for a smaller SUV right now, it'd be a Ford Escape with the 2.0L Ecoboost motor. About $10k cheaper than the BMW. I don't need the extra luxury.

I would still get the prius or some other car that gets good mpg, you can't save more money on gas vs the drive out price of the vehicle. IF you were trying to save money of course. Or even a used luxury vehicle would save you way more money and be equally luxurious.

Errr... that's not always certain.

Lets compare the fueling cost of a 2013 X1 to a 2010 X3 over 100,000 miles.

For me today, that would be ~6,300 dollars.

Kbb is saying that a 2010 X3 is roughly 8,000-10,000 dollars less than a 2013 X1.

At the end of the 100,000 exercise, I would have a ~6 year old X1 with 100,000 miles versus a ~9 year old X3 with 145,000 miles on it. The X1 will have slightly higher residual value.

So it comes down to maintaince and financing/purchasing terms. Over 100,000 miles a new X1 will probably cost within rounding error of a three year old X3. The majority of the upfront cost difference made up by the 20%+ fuel economy difference.

Overall, fuel economy -should- be important to everyone. As the price inflation of fuel outpasses maintainence bills and upfront costs, lifetime fuel costs become a greater and greater part of the out of pocket cost of owning a car.

I personally keep cars for 200,000 miles. Upfront costs are relatively unimportant to me. For instance the X1 being mnentioned probably costs ~35,000 upfront. Over 200,000 miles, I'd be likely to spend ~35,000 dollars on fuel. Therefure the X1 would have a total cost of ~70,000. The 2010 X1 might be there for 28,000, but for the 150,000 miles I'd drive it for the fuel would be 37,500. Assuming the cars are essentially worthless after 200,000 total miles, I would pay ~.35 cents per mile for a new X1 in purchase+fuel versus ~.44 cents per miles for a 2010 X3 in purchase+fuel.
