Camera can record nearly 30 minute long movies in full HD
This week has been big for new announcements in the digital camera world. Sony went official this week with
three new digital cameras
, including the RX1 and a99 high-end offerings. Nikon has now unveiled a new FX-format camera called the D600. The new D-SLR promises to be the smallest and lightest FX-format camera offering excellent performance.
The camera has a 24.3-megapixel sensor and uses the same EXPEED 3 image processing engine that the high-end Nikon D4, D800, and D800E D-SLRs use. The camera measures 141 x 113 x 82 (WxHxD) mm and weighs 760 g. The camera features an optical viewfinder with 100% frame coverage and a 3.2-inch LCD on the back with wide viewing angles.
The camera also offers the dust and water resistance featured in the D800 line and supports the full DX NIKKOR lens line. In addition to shooting 24.3-megapixel still images, the camera can also record full HD movies at 1080p/30p. Movies can be recorded in two different formats, including FX and DX. The camera uses H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression allowing it to record a single movie of up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds.
The camera also supports the Nikon Wireless Mobile Adapter for transferring high-quality photos directly to a smart device for sharing using a wireless network connection. The camera can shoot continuous bursts at 5.5 fps and has an integrated flash.
The D600 is priced at $2100 body-only and at $2700 with an AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens.

Unfortunately it's not for serious photographers either as it lessens the effectiveness of your flashes by 20%.

This is becoming worse and worse for Nikon. I can remember my D80 & D300s allowing 1/400th with auto fp and 1/250th as the standard sync. Seems like 1/250th is possible through auto fp for the D600 as the max. That could be a deal breaker for a lot of photographers.
I'm still waiting on a DX version of the expeed 3 system. I really could care less about FX formats as 99.999% of what I shoot gets cropped to neither FX or DX ratios. Those extra pixels will just get cropped out.

What were you expecting? A full-fledged D800 for $1,000 less? Of course a few corners will be cut here and there.
I expect for many people, the ability to shoot at ISO 6400 or 12800 alone is worth upgrading. Again, this is not for pros. If you're a pro, the equipment pays for itself and you will easily go for D800/D4. D600 is more of an attempt at bringing full-frames into the prosumer market. Not a very successful attempt, I expect, but a first step.
