Is Nokia bracing for failure already?

Nokia is betting big on Windows Phone 8 to turn it smartphone fortunes around and many believe a failure with Windows Phone 8 could spell the end for Nokia. However, Nokia's senior vice president of smart devices, Jo Harlow, says that the new smartphones such as the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 aren't the only chance Nokia has to prove it can compete with smartphone rivals.

Harlow said, "This is a step in the journey. This characterization that it is the last step is not reality. These are two devices; they’re not all the devices that we’ll base on Windows Phone 8. This is our strategy and it’s a journey; there’s not one moment in time that defines everything."

The two new devices from Nokia are some of the first Windows Phone 8 devices to be unveiled. Along with the new operating system, the phones also have improved cameras and wireless charging. While many were excited by the new devices, the unveiling of the phones saw Nokia's stock price fall by as much as 15% after analysts said the new devices lacked "wow factor."

An analyst from CCS Insight said, "It’s hard to see Lumia 920 beating the rival Samsung Galaxy SIII or expected iPhone 5 – success depends on keen prices, clear differentiation and defections from existing platforms iOS and Android."

I thought the last generation of Lumia phones was their last chance and spelled their doom if they failed?

Look at their stock value.

Look at their smartphone market share.

The only company in worse shape is RIM.

When you stop ignoring that RIM is smaller and doesn't have huge expenses of monster firms like MS - then we'll see if you are not the trolls anymore.

They don't have huge expenses- ie: they have plenty of cash right?

While their stock price does suck, there is more to Nokia than smartphones, dare I say the majority of their revenue likely does not come from smartphones... Nokia-Siemens and Nokia Maps come to mind (not to mention their "dumb" phones, which are still quite popular in that product class).

Wonder if they could just sell their (phone) hardware business to a random Chinese company and focus on patent trolling... err... IP licensing.

And what is up with these analysts. They lack differentiation? They are about the only company offering any differentiation at all - Optical image stabilisation? Wireless charging? Colour's other than black/white?

Don't forget the super-sensitive touch screen, able to work with gloves on in cold weather.

If I wasn't so attached to the integrated stylus in my Galaxy Note (and the Note II of course), I'd pick this up in a heartbeat. IMO, the only advantage I'd give the S3 is app selection (an advantage which dwindles by the day) and the display, but only because I can't get enough of the deep blacks of AMOLED; aside from that, the Lumia 920 bests it in almost every way.

I really can't think of anything else a typical person would want in a phone.
