Taboe tablet will have stiff competition
Toy retailer Toys "R" Us has announced a new technology product for kids called the Tabeo. This tablet will be available exclusively at Toys "R" Us stores. The
Wall Street Journal
reports that the move is Toys "R" Us' attempt at fighting so-called showrooming. Showrooming is a phenomenon where people come in the retail stores to try out products and then order them online at a discount.
The tablet will cost $149.99 and will go on sale on October 21. The tablet can be pre-ordered right now via Toys "R" Us. The
Wall Street Journal
reports that when the $149.99 price was unveiled for the Taboe, the makers of some of the other child focused tablets including the Kurio 7, Meep, and Lexibook matched the same price.
The Toys "R" Us Tabeo tablet has a seven-inch screen and features parental controls to block inappropriate content. It has a front-facing camera of unspecified resolution and a child-friendly interface.
The processor for device is a 1 GHz unit, and the screen supports capacitive multitouch technology. Using the tablet kids can read books, play games, listen to music, watch video, and view photos. The tablet has 4 GB of integrated storage and has a micro SDHC card slot for expansion. The tablet ships with 40 pre-loaded games, books, and educational apps. The tablet will also have access to 6,000 other free apps via the Tabeo Store. The tablet also ships with a drop-safe bumper and has Wi-Fi. The tablet runs Android for the operating system.
Parents shopping for a tablet for their children also have similarly priced tablets not specifically aimed at children to choose from, such as the Amazon Kindle Fire currently priced at $159.

For a kid-centric tablet, I'd probably go with the cheap Kindle Fire, but I've also been looking at the Fuhu NABI 2 as it's running ICS on a Tegra 3. It comes with a "kid resistant" bumper and a "kid zone" type layer on top of Android (that can be disabled with a password to get to stock Android). No personal experience with it, but the hardware/specs look good (checked it out in person at BB) and it's got good reviews.
