Android is still tops in the US
ComScore has offered up its latest numbers looking at mobile subscriber market share for the mobile phone industry during the last three months ending in July 2012. To conduct the study, the company surveyed over 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers.
Survey results found that Samsung was the top handset manufacturer overall with 25.6% of the market share in the US. The top operating system in the United States was Android with 52.2% of all smartphone subscribers. Apple iOS was the second most common smartphone operating system with 33.4% of the market.
saw its market share decline from 11.6% in April of 2012 to 9.5% in July 2012. Microsoft also saw its share of the smartphone market decline from 4% in April to 3.6% as of July.
As far as top mobile phone manufacturers, LG was in second place behind Samsung with 18.4% of the market within the United States. Apple had 16.3% of the market for third place with Motorola in fourth place sporting 11.2% of the market and HTC holding 6.4% of the market.
Interestingly, the only two smartphone manufacturers that grew their market share between April 2012 and July 2012 were Apple and HTC with 1.9% and 0.4% gains respectively. The survey also looked at mobile content usage during the quarter with 75.6% of mobile subscribers sending text messages to other phone users. Statistics showed 52.6% of subscribers downloaded an app during the quarter, and 51.2% used a mobile browser during the quarter.
The survey found that 37.9% of all mobile subscribers use their phone to access a blog or social networking site, 33.8% use the phone to play games, and 28.3% listen to music on their mobile phones.

I think the articles mixes stats on the mobile market in general, and the smartphone market subset.

The 25.6% market share for Samsung is for smartphone sales in July 2012. Apple's share for that month was 16.3%. (That's actually up from April's 14.4%, which runs counter to the argument that Samsung now has the most popular smartphone model because iPhone buyers are waiting for the iPhone 5. Though we'd need model-by-model breakdowns to really conclude anything.)
The 33.4% iOS market share is for
smartphones currently in use. That is, the sum of the monthly sales figures for all time, minus all phones which have been discarded and are no longer in service. In other words, the iPhone's best days are behind it, and its market share is actively shrinking.

Or the iPhone's market share isn't decreasing but more and more Americans are switching from old clam shell phones to smartphones?
My parents, brother, sister, are still on clam shell phones.
