Space shuttle Endeavour  (Source: zmescience.com)
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the California Science Center are still moving forward with the transport

It looks like the California Science Center is barking up the wrong tree with its latest project -- cutting down 400 trees to transport NASA space shuttle Endeavour.

Endeavour, which served nearly 30 years in NASA's space shuttle program and completed 25 missions, was retired in 2011 along with the other two members of the program -- Discovery and Atlantis. All three are now being put on display, where Discovery was sent to the National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia and Atlantis was sent to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida.

Now, Endeavour will soon be heading to its final resting place, but there's just one problem (actually, more like 400 problems): about 400 trees will have to cut down in order to transport Endeavour to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. It's approximately a 12-mile trip from the Los Angeles airport to the California Science Center, where power lines and traffic will have to be addressed as well.

But LA residents aren't upset about possible traffic and power issues during the transport; they're more concerned with the cutting down of 400 tall, old trees. According to some local residents, it would take much too long for the trees to grow back to the point they're at now.

"They are cutting down these really big, majestic trees," said Lark Galloway-Gilliam, a local resident. "It will be beyond my lifetime before they will be tall like this again."

However, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the California Science Center don't plan to let 400 trees stop them from having the historic piece of space history on display in their city. The California Science Center even offered to replant twice as many trees in the path that they're cutting.

LA residents countered that cutting the trees isn't only a bad environmental move, but it will also reduce home values in the area.

Endeavour will ultimately make its way to the California Science Center on October 12.

I find it really hard to believe the shuttle could not be moved without cutting 400 tree's. Why not remove the wings and then reattach on arrival.

Depending on the size of the tree it could cost at least $1000 for labor and disposal per tree. And if it really is 400 trees it would be cheaper to take a chainsaw to the wings. I'd rather see that happen. It's not like the shuttle's going anywhere.

Yes and unlike California's failed "green" initiatives, cutting these trees down will provide real "stimulus" from infrastructure improvements! These are chainsaw-ready jobs, why would you deny them!?

Quit trolling. CA is 19th per capita in tax revenue. Sizable yes, but pretty middle of the road. Of course I'm sure all you saw was a big number, and cherry pick the stat that suited you best. Also don't point out that CA received roughly 65B of that $300B back as federal aid.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_tax_revenue_b...

What's laughable is even with all that GDP, the piss poor management and liberal agenda has still almost bankrupted the state. Pathetic indeed. At least Greece has very little production, CA is by far the largest GDP state, but still can't make ends meet.

Look I do empathize with the out of work mother of 3 who lost her husband in the war, trying to make end meets. But that is NOT what CA is. It is a rock star that pisses away all his money on bling, bently's and hoe's that is drinking in the gutter trying to get by. Hard to feel sorry for the dumbasses that have it all and are still broke.

Per capita stat is not relevant to this discussion, why would you penalize California because most people want to live there opposed to flyover country?

What matters is that CA sends $42B of its federal tax revenues to other states(the rest comes back to CA), and has a $16B deficit. Simple math would indicate that if they didn't have to prop up the backwards ass, mostly red states, they could pay their deficit in a few months.

You are such a troll, of course it is relevant. Per capita is the only logical way to look at it. Funny how you libs look at the total numbers when it fits you, and % when it doesn't. You'd be the first tool in line to throw rich guy Z ,paying X million a year in taxes, under the bus because it was only 10% of his earnings (even though the amount paid was huge). But when the tables are turned you look at your big dollar column as too much, even though on a percentage base you are very middle of the road. Typical hypocrite.

Sounds to me like you are way more blue than you realize. Funny that you keep throwing out the "red" is bad montra while villainizing the weatlh distribution that defines your precious "blue" ideals.

What so liberalism is ok, when it's not your money being handed out?

You've correctly identified that there is no consistency at all within their belief system. They'll just use whatever emotional argument can be made, usually belligerently, and ride it for all it's worth. Regardless of how contradictory or nonsensical it is.

This is what happens when a group of people are governed by an ideology that's indefensible and cannot be logically verbalized in a straight-forward manner.

Think about it. He actually thinks in his mind that his whole "CA pays lots of taxes therefore X" talking point is somehow a legitimate counter to the debate.

Saying it without any reasoning doesn't make it true. Per capita is meaningless when talking about the OVERALL debt of a state. But no, CA debt is brought up as an example of a Democrat failing.

Ok you little dumbshit lets try it another way. A method you dems love to use against the rich. % of revenue or in a state's case GDP. Guess where CA is.. that's right 2nd to the bottom in the top 10 states by GDP. So in other words there are 8 state that pay a higher tax rate than you.

Not only are you the Rock stars of the lower 48 pissing away boatloads of money on useless shit driving your state to the verge of bankruptcy. You're also the GE of states with a comparatively small tax rate. Your failure is now complete.

Tax % of GDP by State (go goolge tax revenue by state and gdp by state and do the math)

16% California
19% Texas
21% New York
18% Florida
21% Illinois
20% Pennsylvania
24% New Jersey
22% Ohio
14% Virginia
19% North Carolina

You realize the ratios are that way because there are more rich people in CA and the current federal tax policy favors them to pay a lower percentage of their income, right?

This still does not change the fact that taxes paid by those millionaires in CA go to prop up the dumbass republicans in the flyover states instead of closing their state's budget deficit.

Sorry, if you take money from blue states, you have to live the blue state way. Allow gay marriage, stop with the creationism crap, get nationalized healthcare and then we'll give you some money.

You realize the ratios are that way because there are more rich people in CA and the current federal tax policy favors them to pay a lower percentage of their income, right?

The duplicitous thinking needed to come up with that line of reasoning is simply mindboggling.

First, rich people pay a substantially higher percentage of their income in income taxes. Forget what you read in blogs or political websites. Go look at the IRS tax stats.
http://www.irs.gov/uac/SOI-Tax-Stats---Individual-...

It's a spreadsheet so you can crunch the numbers to your heart's content. Average percentage of adjusted gross income paid as federal income taxes is:

$0-$100k = 11.3%
> $100k = 26.8%
> $1 mil = 28.3%

Second, California pays a more in taxes than it gets back because of progressive taxation policies advocated by the left. You cannot argue that it's fair for the rich to pay more in taxes than they get back in services. Then turn right around and argue that it's unfair that California (a rich state) pays more in taxes than it gets back in services.

They are the same thing. Either you believe the rich deserve to pay more, and that California deserves to pay more than it gets back in services. Or you believe that the rich should pay only as much as they get back in services, and that California should get as much in services as it pays in taxes. Mixing and matching the two as you're doing is hypocritical.

RE: Shuttle Clear Cutting
By corduroygt on 9/5/2012 5:42:25 PM , Rating: 1
Deceptive GOP at work again. Most of the rich get their income from investments, which are taxed at much lower rates, so you are wrong on that point.

Second, my whole point of not paying for the red states was pointing out to the hypocrisy of the situation. Here we are blue staters, paying for all these idiots in the red states, who are against welfare WHILE receiving it. They are the true hypocrites, and that's what my point was. They will become a 3rd world country if we stopped their aid, and that's not what we want. As long as they give up their outdated ways of thinking, they are welcome in the union.

How could it possibly cost $1000 to cut down and cart away a single tree? Maybe if you have a guy with a fine-toothed handsaw doing everything by hand...

These days we have big machines that cut down trees, strip off the branches and cut the trunks into suitable lengths and load the bits up on a trailer. Say, 30 seconds tops, per tree.

Its faster, cheaper and easier to cut off one wing or part of both. The shuttle will NEVER fly again. If you look at the photos, you see the thruster pods have been removed from the nose and rear of the space-craft. The tiles can be removed, cut the wing and re-attach later... then re-glue the tiles and nobody will notice.

This is stupid... mind you, I am into space tech, etc... but re-attaching wings is not rocket science.

Your logic is a bit flawed. The wood and leaves of the older trees contain most of that carbon that it absorbed as a young tree. Cutting it down would eventually undo any benefit it might have had, as these trees aren't likely to go to a lumber yard to be treated and preserved.

The trees are likely too small to be turned into useful lumber.

However, OP's reasoning (that cutting down trees re-introduces into the biosphere the carbon they've sequestered in their wood) leads to an unusual conclusion: We should stop all paper recycling. Immediately.

Paper is made from wood. If we throw paper away, it ends up in a landfill. Core samples from landfills have yielded newspapers from the 1800s pristine enough to still read the print. Landfills are a functional way to sequester carbon in the form of paper and wood.

So if you throw away paper, you're helping sequester carbon underground. If you recycle paper, you're contributing to global warming.

I take it that you'd be OK with the government forcibly doing this on your property instead of finding a smarter way to transport the shuttle?

Cause those 400 trees haven't been there for a long time... if I had grown up near those trees chances are they would be part of my memories and hence my history... also what makes you think it's one or the other, this seems to be the case where you can save both.

*rolls eyes* Honestly, what a pukefest.

How many of those did you hug today? Just curious...

You doublethink cowboys amaze me much more. You do realise you just said "cut down a piece of american history" twice in the same sentance?

The choice isn't hard. Disassemble the wings, transport, then reassemble the wings and *repair* the heatshield. It's not like the shuttles have never ever lost a single heat tile ever. And they're going to get polished up anyway once they arrive on spot (atleast i'd hope so).

It's frickin silly to go for the option that'll take half a century to restore things to their original state, over the option that takes just a bit of money and elbow grease, over some stupid semantics that had to be done anyway on a regular basis while it was still in service and had to actually go back up to space so the margin for error was alot smaller.

Hey, if they don't want to cut those trees down, it's not too late to send that shuttle to Houston! I'm sure they'd love to have it!

The irony of tree hugging California having to cut down 400 trees is just too delicious!! LOL

another option would be to close the 10 and land it there. for the couple hours it was closed, no one would notice it anyways since its always a parking lot

but.. i think i now know what im doing that friday. should be an awesome sight

Because the types of trees they are cutting down are some of the most damaging to the environment. They've cost the city millions in street repair and consume more water than any other type in the region.
