Samsung score a victory over Apple

Samsung has had a pretty rough couple of week following its loss to Apple in a California district court. Samsung was found guilty of infringing on various Apple design patents and was ordered to pay $1.05 billion in damages. To add insult to injury, Apple is looking to add the flagship Galaxy S III to the banned list in the U.S.
Even with all of that bad news swirling around Samsung, the South Korean company can at least take solace in the fact that its Galaxy S III has knocked the Apple iPhone 4S off its perch as the best-selling smartphone in America.

Samsung Galaxy S III
"We believe this is the first month since the iPhone 4S launched in October 2011 that it was not the top-selling smartphone in the U.S. market," said Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley.
However, Samsung's victory over Apple may be short-lived. Apple has officially confirmed a September 12 press event to announce the next generation iPhone. Sales will likely start towards the end of September.

animated live tiles (not just bland animations like the little notifications numbers in iOS, mind you), varying tile sizes (so as to accommodate fancier animations), more pinning options, and scrolling dynamic font art.

If this was your main point, I agree. But your original post said graphics, which I found baffling.

Have you used Jelly Bean v. iOS 6 on an iPhone 4S?

I do not use Beta OS's. iOS5 on an iphone 4S is smooth as butter, especially when scrolling down pages in the browser. I use Android 4.0.4 and the web browser is neither as smooth nor the fonts look as good. Can't comment on Windows Phone.

Windows Phone has over 100,000...

And iOS/Android are closing in on a 1 million?

The number of apps is irrelevant, but not getting the latest cool app that all your friends are using, or getting it 12 months later, is a purchasing consideration.

"I use Android 4.0.4 and the web browser is neither as smooth"

So, in other words, no, you have not used the latest version that addressed that issue and is also known to have surpassed Apple.

Galaxy S3 does not have 4.1 yet, so it's a moot point. It's not an official OS yet just like iOS6.

And "known to have surpassed Apple" LOL.

OK, Jelly Bean on the Galaxy Nexus with the old 1.2ghz TI OMAP CPU is faster than the iPhone 4s with OS5 and with OS6 beta. There are videos all over you tube comparing the two. Go see for yourself or just STFU.

It is NOT faster, but finally it stopped skipping when scrolling through browser pages it seems. So it just caught up with the iPhone...after 5 years I guess that's an accomplishment

You could say the same thing about the 4 inch screen and 4G on the iPhone 5 now Apple is catching up. It is what it is, so lets not pretend it isnt.

Complaining about graphics is baffling, especially considering that the iPhone still has the best mobile GPU on the market, not to mention developers that actually take advantage of it.

Either way, UI complaints are grasping at straws. Many are happy with Windows XP, the thing that matters is application support. iOS is perfectly fine UI-wise, but its developer support puts it way over the top. If you want to tinker with your UI though, awesome, there are other choices for sure.

WP7/8 has an amazing UI, probably my favorite, but sadly I won't consider it until it gets better hardware and more developers.

"the thing that matters is application support"

LOL, that is pretty amazing. The one most important thing just happens to be the one thing Apple has an advantage in. Wow, what a stroke of luck.

I guess those of us with the following things are just missing out on the great apps on IOS ;)

- Larger Screens
- Higher resolution screens
- Faster CPU
- 4G
- Better battery life (while powering larger screens)
- Better OS
- Better UI
- Prettier OS
- Faster Voice search (with more features to boot)
- Flexibility in OS (Tons of Custom ROM's, etc)
- Flexibility in hardware (qwerty models, removable batteries, larger models, smaller models, high end models, mid range models, cheap models)
- Micro SD card
- Micro USB
- Plug and play as a flash drive to copy files

That is a long list of advantages, but hey, apps are the most important thing right?

Unless you have an iPhon5-new-whatever... your list is speculative.

Larger screen? Its longer, not larger. Not larger than most Android phones.

Higher resolution? Nope... just longer.

Faster CPU, should be, its new.

Better OS? Hard to judge. More opinion than fact.

Better looking UI? iOS hasn't changed in 5+ years. Its fine, it works... and is IS starting to look dated. But its also its selling point.

Much of your list is... blah.

The iPhone 5 will sell very well... that is for sure.

I was sarcastically showing Androids advantages over the iPhone... That list is Android, not iPhone5.

Download Launcher7 (google play store) - it even does things WP7/8 cannot do... rotate tiles to match orientation of the phone. User option to color individual tiles. My tiles are blue, but my CALL one is green.

Its free... its very nice.

So, I'm not buying a WP7 or WP8 device. Also with the HD resolution screen... the bland colors of WP7/8 is not going to cut it.
