New mockup spied and headphones leaked
The rumors about the next-generation iPhone continue to build as we near a rumored September launch date for the device. During IFA in Berlin last week, a mockup of the next generation iPhone turned up on video in the hands of DSM Israel's CEO.
The video shows an iPhone with an all-metal back and the new heavily rumored smaller dock connector. If true, that smaller dock connector might as well be an annuity for iPhone accessory makers, as everyone will have to buy new accessories such as docks.
Rumors continue to point to an official Apple event on September 12 to unveil a new iPhone and the device is expected to start shipping later in the month.
In case you're wondering, GSM Israel laid hands on the phone via an unnamed manufacturer of cases and accessories for the iPhone. It would make sense that an accessory company would have early access to mockups of the next-generation iPhone to allow them to have cases ready when the device launches. In fact, in the past the first real glimpses of iPhone mockups or prototypes did in fact come from accessory makers.
Another recently leaked image claims to show the new design of the earphones that will ship with the next-generation iPhone. The earphones have an opening on the side and a small slit in the body for sound rather than having a speaker grill on the front of the earphones. It appears the large side port could be some sort of bass expansion port. It also appears that the headphones are made from one piece of plastic rather than multiple pieces.

What you are seeing is an artifact of the early manufacturing process. The iPhone does not have a solid case, the mock up pictured seems to have a two piece case, with the top being the largest, and a small bottom piece which would be attached once the inner circuits have been added.
It is important to remember two things:
1. This case could be a mock up. This would mean that the general shape would be correct but the specific pieces and colors could be changing.
2. It takes a while to (or it has in the past) to get the plastic and metal component colors to match enough that Jobs would be happy. These could be early attempts which still needed tuning.
Even if Apple added a touch pad to the back of the phone, there would not be a color discrepancy as there are in the photo. Also, what good would it do? You could use blue tooth to connect it to your Mac and use it as a touch pad? Any idea I can come up with would be better served by the touch screen on the front of the device.

The phone rear is indisputably two-tone for both the black and the white phones. Look at the so-called white phone above: Did you miss the GIANT silver area between the tiny white areas? That's a two-tone design and not an artifact. I'm not talking about a small strip.
If I need to be more specific: It's the obvious area dominating the rear every bit as much as the screen dominates the front. You know: the one with the big "iPhone" text and all regulatory and certification info. That.
Scrolling without accidentally interacting with page/screen elements/objects.
Cursor movement and insertion point placement in text boxes.
Precision pointing in apps that use it.
A "grip sensor" for automatic orientation.
