Intel's embedded IA roadmap
Single digit TDP envelopes for all!

As if Intel needed any more reasons for people to like Yonah, the company just announced plans to build a 1.2GHz, 65nm Yonah processor with a 533MHz FSB and 2MB L2 cache.  But here's the kicker, the processor has a TDP envelope of 9W.  The new processor will sell under the name Intel Core Duo U2500.

Intel previously had a Pentium M Dothan SKU, the Pentium M LV 738, which had a TDP envelope of about 10W, but was a single-core processor.  Both the Pentium M LV 738 and the Core Duo U2500 are BGA processors, meaning they are soldered directly onto the motherboard.  These embedded processors are used for things like ultra portable tablets, UMPCs and Ethernet switches.  The Core Duo U2500 should be available immediately. 

Furthermore, Intel's roadmap reveals that 65nm Merom processors will also have Low Voltage variants.  At the Intel Developer Forum earlier this year Intel representatives announced that Merom would have more robust features when it comes to power management.  It certainly isn't hard to fathom that single digit TDP envelopes may become commonplace in the near future. Merom is expected to launch this August, although the Low Voltage variants of processors from Intel typically launch a few months after the main segments is announced.

Would this allow for a completely passive cooled HTPC (and silent!)? 1.2Ghz isnt speedy, but it should be fine for a HTPC...

Yes. Cooling 9watts is trivial even with a small heatsink. And don't forget it's 2 x 1.2Ghz and mhz to mhz Yonah is faster than A64 or Pentium M. Oh, and no need for active PSU.

heard of samsung's 32gb nand ssd?

Besides non mechanical media I really doubt you could hear a suspended Samsung HD with acoustic management from over a meter's distance...

Incorrect. MHz to MHz, Yonah is slightly slower than Dothan - I've measured this myself and was a little disappointed.

Nope. I really doubt you were the only one to get "proper" results. It is a fact that Yonah is faster than pentium M per Mhz. I've read at least 15 reviews and have empirical experiance.

Same here - I benchmarked a Pentium-m 533Mhz 2Ghz and a Yonah at 1.9Ghz (1.83Ghz with 5% overclock) - the Yonah was faster in every application I tested which were all single threaded running one at a time.

Does it switch of the second core off while running on batteries to keep TDP below 9w ?
Power and performance while connected to mains -vs- batteries ?

Umm, the original post was about an HTPC. You'd get annoyed not being able to watch HD pretty quick considering how much content there is.

720p AVC should be fine if the decoder can use both cores. Maybe even more if you add a passive nvidia or ATI card that can help out a bit.

Just drop in any nvidia card based on the last 3 generations and you should be just fine. Even 1080p content on my 3.4GHz only uses 10-15% CPU.

Seriously, I'm not sure I've seen many graphics cards designed for cool running, though perhaps they exist.

If the HD decoder can take advantage of both cores, then it should be speedy enough.
