Nokia's next generation Windows Phone will have to vie with Samsung for supremacy of Microsoft's ecosystem
Wondering what Nokia Oyj. (
) has in store for Windows Phone 8? You're not alone.
Window Phone 8 is suddenly very well positioned, thanks to a
potentially precedent-setting verdict against Android and Samsung
Electronics Comp., Ltd. (
) via Apple, Inc. (
). Samsung is already eyeing Windows Phone 8 as a
potential safe haven
from Apple's litigation, unveiling
a gorgeous 4.8-inch Galaxy-like Windows Phone 8 handset
That pickup is both good news and bad news for Nokia. On the one hand, it
brings attention to the Windows Phone platform
, and by proxy Nokia's efforts. On the other hand, it means that Nokia needs to step up its game because Samsung looks to be getting serious about Windows Phone. Nokia and Samsung are
already trading jabs
Now Nokia posted a teaser to YouTube:
...which suggests that a
Windows Phone 8 device
announcement is coming on Sept. 5 (5.9.2012 in European notation). That's just seven days before Apple's
anticipated iPhone 5 announcement
It should be interesting to see what Nokia has cooked up. Its first generation Windows Phone -- the
has been a
mild sales success
in the U.S., despite being exclusive to AT&T, Inc. (

I bought a Lumia 900 on the recommendation of a friend; needed a phone immediately, didn't comparison shop like I normally do, bought it and ran.
Holy cow, what a disappointment, coming from android.
First of all, MS can say there's 80k apps or whatever now all they want. Half are in another language (no obvious option to filter out the apps from japan and china), and the other half are porn or a thousand different flashlight apps. Even worse, all the pathetic attempts to rip off popular Android and iOS apps/games.
And the rare unique, useful app, how the hell am I supposed to find it? No way to sort apps the come up in different categories, and at least Android by default sorts them by popularity it seems. Not sure how exactly WP ranks them, I can't discern any logical pattern.
I kinda like the interface; it's simple and functional, doesn't let me go too crazy. But the app situation is so crippling that the interface could be pure gold and the overall experience would still be a let down.
Oh, and no ability for app developers to hook in to some API and monitor bandwidth usage; have to log in to my account to get their "estimate" of my usage to date. Kind of a pain, and a possible recipe for data overages.
At least the camera seems good, and the phone functions as a phone very, very well. Good integration with what I use for calendars and keeping my life together too. Oh, and Astronomy Hub is a nice app. But thats it.
If I hadn't been busy doing other things, I'd of paid the restocking fee. As it is, I might try to dump it early and go back to android. But I'd stay away until the store is revamped and more and better developers support the phone, and WP8 won't really fix any of that by itself. There's really just no comparison, none at all, to the app collection amassed by android or iOS.
Sorry for the rant, but if it saves one person from considering and being disappointed in WP, then mission accomplished. And, like I said, it does what it does very well, so maybe if all the extra apps aren't important to you then thats fine.
(I am Google and I approve this message.)

While WP7's app collection was a little lacking, aren't apps between Windows 8, Windows RT and Windows Phone 8 supposed to be compatible between versions ? If so, watch the number of apps in WP8 skyrocket even past apple's in less than a year.
I agree about the app ranking though. Even in the Windows 8 RC, the few apps they have in there are painfull to browse through. They need to fix that ASAP. But to be fair, I can't ever find apps in either Platform without searching for it and that's what I miss the most in Windows 8. Where do we search for apps in the store by name ??? That's the only part I find is bad design on it.

Apps written for Metro can run on both Win8 and WinRT - not WP8. Sorry.
