Rollout of first-gen LTE continues to be successful

While rival AT&T, Inc. (T) proved slightly faster in early speed tests, no one is debating that the LTE coverage of Verizon Wireless -- Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) and Vodafone Group Plc. (LON:VOD) -- is without equal.  Since its rollout of the fourth-generation wireless technology, which began in Dec. 2010, Verizon has been steadily expanding to new cities/suburbs across the U.S. every few months.

It announced this week that its August addition of 34 new markets and expansions of 38 existing markets will bring its total LTE coverage to 370 markets and 75 of the U.S. population.

Where it's available, AT&T provides arguably a superior option, given that if 4G coverage drops out the transition to 3G+ (HSPA+) is smoother than Verizon's transition to 3G (which will drop video streams, etc.).

However, for many users who regularly travel either for business, family, or pleasure -- or for the many users in regions where AT&T does not cover -- Verizon's stellar coverage trumps its rival's speed and infrastructure advantages in select markets.

Verizon coverage
Covering 75 percent of Americans, Verizon is unmatched in LTE coverage.

Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) recently turned on its new LTE network as well, but it remains a far cry from either Verizon in coverage or AT&T in speed, although its plans are generally affordably priced.

Verizon is looking to crank up its speeds with "advanced LTE" next year, which will come closer to fulfilling the original spec for the technology.

I live 30 minutes from NYC, and I get no 4g coverage from Verizon. If I go 2 towns over I do. So they can show whatever map they want, but the reality is it is still very spotty.

Agreed. I am having a similar experience in the mid-west.

We just got 4G about 4 days ago. I live in the desert north of LA.

Why on earth would you do that.

I am pretty sure that they are spending money putting LTE in high-population areas before they start working on rural areas.

30 minutes from NYC is rural? LOL!

Yeah it's not rural when I literally have 20 24-hour dunkin donuts in a 10 mile radius of my house.

What they still allow you to eat food that's bad for you there?

When you described your location as 'in a town' I assumed you meant 30 miles from the NYC suburbs. There are plenty of ruralish small towns quite close to NYC as you move north.

I switched to Verizon yesterday. I live in the middle of nowhere and my closest neighbor is 2 miles away. I have LTE. It wasn't my reason for switching and I had no idea it was there (wasn't on their coverage maps), but it sure is sweet. 18-22 MB down.

I guess my point is, if they can justify putting it my area, yours will be saturated in no time.

Funny, I work at a Verizon in north Jersey also about 30 minutes from NYC, and we had the same problem up until 2 weeks ago (where 2 towns over in any direction you would find 4g coverage). Most other parts in the 50 mile radius around NYC already have 4g and the parts that don't are being worked on consistently. So, just a bit of patience and you will see it soon =)
