The service is initially being rolled out in San Francisco
EBay seems to be following in Amazon's footsteps with a new same-day shipping service called eBay Now.
EBay Now is a same-day shipping convenience that is initially being rolled out in San Francisco. Residents here can register for the iOS app, eBay Now Beta, and receive same-day shipping from select local stores like Target, Best Buy, Macy's and Toys 'R' Us on its Milo platform.
For now, eBay Now only works on orders over $25. Those taking part in the beta testing get $15 off their first eBay Now purchase as well as free shipping on their first three orders. After that, a $5 delivery fee is applied to each eBay Now order.
EBay Now testers can place orders Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some packages will deliver as soon as an hour after being placed.
As of right now, people are being invited to use the service, but other SF residents are allowed to sign up. However, those invited will receive access first.
Last month, it was announced that Amazon was getting ready to launch its own same-day delivery service. This was a result of Amazon agreeing to collect sales tax in certain states (which it previously fought regarding the same issue) in exchange for more Amazon distribution centers within those states. Amazon poured a lot of money into these distribution centers, making sure that they're efficient with picking robots that accurately improve shipping times, and by placing "lockers" in nearby drug stores and convenience stores where people can pick up same-day orders near their jobs, if more convenient.
You can sign up for eBay Now here.
