Microsoft Looks to Scrap "Metro" Codename

Does a UI by any other name smell as sweet?
Microsoft Corp. (
) is reportedly preparing a major change in terms of branding, scrapping the codename "Metro", which was previous used to refer to the user interface text/geometry/color style found
in Windows 8
, Windows Phone, and certain company websites.
A leaked internal company
mentions the decision being made after "discussions with an important European partner". One
is that German retailer Metro AG (
), which appears to control the EU trademark on the word "Metro", threatened to sue.
Microsoft may be cautious about generating any more ill will in the European Union, a region that has already relished
lashing it with fines
, and which is currently
considering new fines
browsers in Windows 8
Regardless, Microsoft advises employees to "discontinue the use". As a stop-gap, the interface that shall not be named by its former name shall be called "Windows 8 style UI", according to Microsoft, until a more permanent name is decided upon.
The decision on the more catchy new name should come "by the end of this week", hopefully with a bit more trademark research this time around.
Metro is one of Germany's largest retailers.
The good news for Microsoft is that given the
has received, changing the name may actually reduce public awareness of some of the harsher criticism of Windows 8, which largely comes from power-users and is of questionable applicability to the average non-enthusiast/non-power-user.

Gee, yet many in the PC world has been saying the iPad and tablets were a fad until 2012. Tiles have their place... but the Win7-x86 desktop isn't it.
If you are in desktop mode, then any benefit of tiles is gone. If you are in metro Apps, you still cannot see the tiles. Yet with Windows7, you can see the Start Menu (same as the start screen in W8) and your data and gadgets at the same time.
Since Metro Apps are not compatible With Windows and most of us really don't need MS-Office, who needs Windows8? Time to go Linux, Apple, ChromeOS or Android.
BTW: you are right - I use my iPad around the home because it takes about 1~2 seconds to turn on and connected to my network. I can quickly look up something on the internet without waiting for Windows to wake up or boot up. Its lighter than my notebook of course.
Its almost 20 years of WindowsOS... frankly, its getting to be more of a pain in the ass to deal with. It was nice in the old days, you bought your OS upgrade disks, you installed and and you were done. These keys, these activations, these DRMs, these phone calls, etc... its old and we pay for this crap?
The price of Linux or Android is free. Its about time we started moving long.
"This is about the Internet. Everything on the Internet is encrypted. This is not a BlackBerry-only issue. If they can't deal with the Internet, they should shut it off." -- RIM co-CEO Michael Lazaridis
