Microsoft Looks to Scrap "Metro" Codename

Does a UI by any other name smell as sweet?
Microsoft Corp. (
) is reportedly preparing a major change in terms of branding, scrapping the codename "Metro", which was previous used to refer to the user interface text/geometry/color style found
in Windows 8
, Windows Phone, and certain company websites.
A leaked internal company
mentions the decision being made after "discussions with an important European partner". One
is that German retailer Metro AG (
), which appears to control the EU trademark on the word "Metro", threatened to sue.
Microsoft may be cautious about generating any more ill will in the European Union, a region that has already relished
lashing it with fines
, and which is currently
considering new fines
browsers in Windows 8
Regardless, Microsoft advises employees to "discontinue the use". As a stop-gap, the interface that shall not be named by its former name shall be called "Windows 8 style UI", according to Microsoft, until a more permanent name is decided upon.
The decision on the more catchy new name should come "by the end of this week", hopefully with a bit more trademark research this time around.
Metro is one of Germany's largest retailers.
The good news for Microsoft is that given the
has received, changing the name may actually reduce public awareness of some of the harsher criticism of Windows 8, which largely comes from power-users and is of questionable applicability to the average non-enthusiast/non-power-user.

Truth. Every word.
The coming tablet revolution will enable so many more usage scearios then we currently have. The trolls here couldn't possibly imagine computers doing ANYTHING other than what they can currently do (let's not forget our computing devices of yesterday/today/tomorrow in theory can solve ANY Turing-decidable problem).
MS are setting themselves up nicely for a completely new personal computing market. That's right. Desktop be damned. The money is drying up in the traditional computing sense. Don't believe me? Google latest trends on sales of desktops, laptops, and tablets. Take a guess at which one is going to dwarf the other two in just a few years time... small, lightweight, portable, anywhere, fast, fluid, always-on... it's just what people want. It's what years of research have shown people want. Apple furthers the evidence by reporting quarter after quarter of ridiculous revenue and profit from their relatively new cash cow of iOS devices.
Honestly, I currently sport 1 laptop and 1 desktop. Since first using the developer preview in September, I can't wait to ditch both and only use a touch device, with a closet server for my movies/music/etc. Then I can get all my data from anywhere, and only need to carry around one device. Need to do some work? get a keyboard/mouse/monitor and hook them up. BAM! Windows 8 desktop to the rescue. It's pretty much the same as Windows 7, and can even, by-golly, run all of EA-Activision's re-released crap.
Speaking of games, geez, how will you do that without a desktop? Easy. Thunderbolt + external graphics card (Yep, they're not released yet. But in another year I don't think that will be the case).
I'm fucking sick of hearing the hate on the start screen. Have you guys even used Windows 8 for more than about 10 seconds? Do you honestly think you'll spend more than 3 seconds at the start screen if you're actively working on something on a computer? Do you spend all day at the office staring at your current Start Menu going "Wow, I love how organized all my programs are!"
It was a nauseating experience, indeed, reading all of these haters' postings. Everyone here is so BLIND. We need more forward thinking from people like Cerin.
