severe jaw deficiency   (Source:
The stem cells, which are tissue repair cells called ixmyelocel-T, are used to re-grow craniofacial tissue

Humans with jawbone deficiencies in need of dental implants could benefit from a new stem cell trial conducted by Michigan researchers.
Darnell Kaigler, study leader from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, along with William Giannobile, co-author and director of the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research, and Aastrom Biosciences Inc. collaborated to create a stem cell-based method for bone regeneration.
"In patients with jawbone deficiencies who also have missing teeth, it is very difficult to replace the missing teeth so that they look and function naturally," said Kaigler. "This technology and approach could potentially be used to restore areas of bone loss so that missing teeth can be replaced with dental implants."
The stem cells, which are tissue repair cells called ixmyelocel-T, are used to re-grow craniofacial tissue. They are taken from bone marrow from the patient's own hip and grown using Aastrom Biosciences Inc.'s proprietary system.
To put ixmyelocel-T to the test, the team conducted a human trial where 24 patients with jawbone deficiencies and missing teeth were split into two groups: one that received the stem cell treatment, and the other that received convention bone regeneration treatment.
The stem cells were placed into the mouth and jaw. Patients were observed after six and 12 weeks, and according to the results, those receiving the stem cell treatment experienced faster bone repair and greater bone density than those with traditional bone therapy. Also, the stem cell group required less secondary bone grafting for implants.
This type of treatment could be used for those born with defects or those who've suffered trauma or certain diseases. However, more clinical trials are required before these stem cell therapies can be used regularly.

Either way, we should pour government grant money into stem cell research.

Those religious heads will come along when they need the medical help.

Or we could use embryonic stem cells from umbilical cords and avoid the "issue" completely....nah Democrats want to keep the issue alive rather than solve the problem easily.

Or, we could just use your own adult stem cells to naturally repair your own tissue, instead of injecting cells with an entirely different genome (and a propensity to go cancerous, generate alternate tissue populations, be a target for your immunesystem) into your body. Best yet, no issues of supply since you carry all those regenerative potential cells right there in you. Hey look, everyone's problem is solved. Thanks science.

Adult Stem cells are where research should be pointed. I work with a guy who had cancer they did chemo then injected him with his bothers stem cells and he got his immune system back along with his brothers shell fish allergy. It was much like an organ transplant as far as rejection concerns.

The tech right now points at adult stem cells as being viable cures for many things right now and points at embryonic as maybe someday but not now unless you want complications....

Christians largely have no issue with stem cell research as long as you're not murdering the unborn to get the cells.

But hey just keep up that hate.

Let me also add or creating embryos just to harvest stem cells from them. Amounts to the same thing and essentially treating humans as cattle. Growing what we need and discarding the rest.

Maybe you have no morals but some people do.

. . . so it's totally moral to do it to cattle but not humans why?

Because cattle are not human beings and are not a self-aware being. Now you show me a cattle that makes decisions about its life and that has self-awareness, and we'll talk.

If you view cattle and humans at the same level, well then I really don't want you in charge of anything my life might in any way be connected with.

Because cows are delicious, that's why.

That they are!

A little OT but I think I'll share anyways: I made an awesome skillet burger last night and it is so easy any red-blooded Man should know how to do this.

It works best with frozen hamburger which you thaw, then start to pre-heat a frying pan/skillet with a nice lump of coconut oil plopped in it so it melts nicely, coating everything. (Coconut oil isn't nearly as bad for you as you'd think--well, the theory suggests at least).

You then make your patties and put them in the pan and sprinkle a nice amount of salt on them, covering with a lid afterwards. Let them cook for a few minutes (about five or six) on medium-low heat (I never get close to medium as they'll burn), then flip. After you flip, pour some more salt on them and cook for about two to three minutes. Add cheese (American is awesome), turn off the heat and let it melt, soaking in.

Done. Put on a bun (preferrably lightly toasted) and whatever else you'd like. Awesome, unhealthy goodness right there!

Thanks cows!

What's the whole point of this?

Well, simple, you wouldn't go next door chop up your neighbor, put them through a meat grinder, freeze them, thaw it back out and make a juicy burger using their meat, would you? If so... you need help, serious help.

Thus, cows are different from humans... in an edible, sane sense.

Not to mention any hypothetical embryonic stem cell industry would be a virtual dead end at some point. I venture to say in 50 years stem cell therapy will be so common that each person may receive treatment several times a year, probably even for arbitrary applications. What would we do? Take all of our teens and 20-somethings women and put them on conveyor belt and harvest their eggs for everyone's benefit? Yeah, it's sustainable but only until stem cell therapy becomes ubiquitous (which I'm looking forward to).

Also, there's unequivocally less risk associated with using one's own stem cells than those from a foreign body. With embryonic stem cells, with current tech, you're cursed for the remainder of your life of having a suppressed immune system due to immunosuppression drugs - not fun. Could you get away from having to use immunosuppression drugs? Possibly? Does any doctor consider it worth the risk of tissue rejection? Absolutely not...

And by the way, you have to be a numb nut to compare human beings to cattle on a moral level. Every animal deserves a certain level of respect, absolutely. I can wholeheartedly agree that we as a race don't give the respect to mother nature that is due but to suggest we're comparably the same is idiotic. Hey, why not compare us to cabbage and carrots too?

um no dipshit. theres nothing in the constitution that allows for government money to be spent on scientific research. try to find it...go ahead.

Plus you apparently didnt read the part where it said "They are taken from bone marrow from the patient's own hip and grown using Aastrom Biosciences Inc.'s proprietary system."

The only stem cells we can make use of are our own. So killing unborn babies (dont know why liberals always wanna kill babies and save murderers... maybe you guys should just start wearing brown shirts and stop pretending to care about the defenseless) isnt going to do shit to help anyone.
