Volt sales continue to grow

General Motors has been pushing the Volt for well over a year as sales continue to rise and fall depending on the month. In March of 2012, GM suspended production of the Volt due to weak demand. Production of the Volt was started back up in April of 2012, earlier than expected, thanks to an uptick in demand for the extended range electric vehicle.
 
General Motors has now announced that in June 2012 it sold 1,760 Volts, which is double what it sold in June 2011. So far in 2012 General Motors the sold 8,817 Volts, which adds up to more than three times the 2,745 Volts that it sold in the same period of 2011. In fact, so far in 2012 GM has sold more Volts than in all of 2011. Total Volts sales in 2011 were roughly 7,600 units.
 
General Motors continues to outsell its closest Japanese rival, the Nissan Leaf by more than 3 to 1. That is no surprise considering the Leaf is a pure electric vehicle whereas the Volt has an onboard generator that allows for a much longer driving distance than the Leaf.
 
Compared to the Volt, sales of the Nissan Leaf plummeted 69% for June to 535 units. Nissan has only been able to sell 3,418 Leaf EV's so far in 2012, a decline of 19% over the same period 2011.

Nissan maintains that will sell 20,000 Leaf EVs in the US this year, but that seems far-fetched. Nissan would need to sell 2763 Leafs each month for the remainder of the year, which is more of the vehicles than Nissan has sold all year.

Nissan just needs to market it better and on top of that, make it more affordable. Yes it is cheaper than the Volt but I think shaving off another 5 grand will really get the ball rolling.

In nissan's defense its got to be hard to sell a car as ugly as the leaf.

I saw a leaf struggling in the rain the other day. Couldn't even keep up with traffic (70mph) with its headlights and wipers (and presumably defroster) on. I don't really mind how ugly it is, but its range and capabilities are underwhelming.

I think this is exactly why most EVs are not doing so well. They are for a very specific market of people who own two vehicles and drive short distances to work, but in reality people want the option for longer range. This is where the PHEVs at this point are going to outsell the EVs unless some breakthrough in battery technology comes out.

The bad on the Volt is only having 2 seats in the back row. I can't buy one, but hopefully the new Ford PHEVs will be better to handle my family.

Sometimes I think they want some of these cars to be as ugly as possible, so that they won't sell.

Didn't Nissan also design the body of the leaf? If so, that can't be in their defense, its further to their detriment.

Good suggestions but I think it's time to face the reality, the unpopular position that I've been taking for years now:

People don't want electric cars.

Why is it so hard to gather all the statistics and consumer trend analysis, and simply naturally follow what the data is screaming at us to comprehend? Sorry it clashes with peoples progressive ideology, but these things are simply not selling. And it doesn't take a rocket scientists to see why.

Leaf too expensive? Excuse me? I think if the average person was just dying to "get off" of oil and were begging for electric cars, the Leaf would sell great! With the ridiculous EV subsidy and "tax credit" anyone looking to buy a new car can get a Leaf.

Styling and being ugly? That doesn't seem to hurt the Prius and Insight, which are just as "ugly".

Market it better? You would have to be living in a cave to have not seen a Leaf commercial, radio spot, or magazine adds for the Leaf. Same goes for the Volt.

If we have to pay people almost $8k to buy one of these things, and then Nissan has to shave another $5k to "get the ball rolling", why would ANYONE think electric vehicles were a good product? Why even make them?

If we put every dollar wasted spent on trying to bribe people into buying an EV, not counting the economic impact of the new CAFE rules, and instead just invested that into battery technology...EV's MIGHT make sense at some point in the future. But for now I guess keep scratching your head as to why they aren't selling. If the truth were a snake, it would have bit ya.

I wouldn't say CAN get a Leaf. Get them down to the price of a Yaris or Versa and then we can say that. If I was going to buy something to only use for the work commute I would be looking in that ultra low price segment, and honestly the Leaf falls in the category of something only for the work commute for most people. For me driving 35 miles total each day to and from work, mostly on back roads the Leaf would be perfect, but not at the current price because it would not replace the need to have another car for most of my other driving. What I really need to find is and 80's diesel Rabbit for the commute :)

And that's your mistake, comparing the cost of EV cars to hybrids or non EV's. EV's are ALWAYS going to be more expensive than ICE vehicles. The Yaris, are you kidding? Some stripped down bargain basement compact starting at $14k? Nobody could possibly make an EV to compete with that and actually make a profit.

And this goes back to my point. EV's are NOT seen as value buys by the at-large consumer. You'll see people making statements like "if they were cheaper...." or "well I would have to buy two cars...". These are major hurdles to overcome in selling the product.

Actually it is exactly what I am talking about not a mistake. When ICE vehicles first were introduced only the rich could afford them, but once Ford introduced the Model T and almost everyone could afford one then everyone had one. The same will be true with EVs. Eventually EVs will compete in price with a bargain basement compact and then is when we will see them begin to take off.

Anything not seen as a value buy by most consumers will never take over the market, even flat screen TVs were not that popular when they were first introduced. When flat screen TV became less expensive and offered the same or better performance to CRT units they quickly took over the market and CRT units pretty much disappeared overnight. LCD computer monitors were the same way. Cordless phones, cellphones, computers, air travel, and so many other things once considered luxuries or even just good items that were only affordable by the rich soon became common everyday items once almost everyone could afford them and the quality was there.

The statement is still true, that IF anyone wants EVs to take over the auto market, then they must become the best bang for the buck option across the entire market. It is not going to happen in the next few years, but hopefully the technology will continue to progress at a good pace.

They need an 8yr/100kmi warranty on their drivetrain, and their choice of passive/air-cooled battery design probably makes that infeasible. People are already talking about lost life on batteries due to excessive heat:
