Could Nokia flip-flop to Android?

After the announcement of 10,000 global job cuts sent shares of Finnish phonemaker Nokia Oyj.'s (HEX:NOK1V) stock into a deeper tailspin, the executive ranks were rustled and a new chairman -- Risto Siilasmaa -- was installed.

Speaking with YLE.fi, a Finnish news site, the new chairman said that Symbian is, for all intents and purposes dead.  He comments, "Symbian’s market share has come down close to zero."

That makes it all the stranger that Nokia is launching one of its most high end handsets -- the PureView -- with the now effectively end-of-life Symbian Belle.

Nokia, which has seen modest success with its distinctive Lumia 900 LTE handset, is hopeful that Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) upcoming Windows Phone 8 wil further drive its receovery.  Mr. Siilasmaa says he expects the new OS to be a hit.

But in a surprising comment, he also remarked that Nokia had a "contingency plan" should his company's Windows Phone offerings flop.  That admission comes despite partner Microsoft paying royally to prop up the embattled phonemaker.

The big question is what that "contingency plan" is.  Seemingly the only possibility would be to jump onboard the Android ship.  But with Nokia's weak U.S. market penetration the big question is whether that option is even feasible.

I like the WP7 interface on phones myself (Windows8 metro on desktops computers still sucks the big one).

But there were other options. go to youtube and check out "launcher 7" - I use this on my 2 year old Android. Its the WP7 interface for Android. I love it. And it does a few tricks MS-WP78 doesn't BUT SHOULD:
1 - Custom color per tile (if wanted). So my PHONE tile is green, while my basic tiles are red or blue or whatever. Sticks out big time.

2 - Tile Rotation. Yep, looks VERY COOL... makes no sense that MS didn't do this.

So it looks like the HTC ONE X will be my next phone and on day 1, I'm going to put launcher 7 on it. Also, the ALL APPS page is editable... so I can HIDE the at&t crap or any thing else that I don't use or can't un-install.

I looked at iPhones again... I'm happy with my ipad... but iPhones glass back and high-theft rates AND non-customized UI has me stay with Android.

PS: Sorry to hear about the Lumia problem. Samsung has their issues too. I was looking to get a Lumia, but I prefer the size of the 800, which isn't carried by at&t or anyone (stupid of them). Maybe people DON'T want a phone that is huge.
