Details of 2013 console and 2014 augmented reality glasses trickle out

Want to know secret details about Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) upcoming Xbox 720?  Too bad, says Microsoft.

A small army of lawyers at Covington & Burling LLP, among the international law firms whom Microsoft employs, have taken to the internet waging war against a documents leak which hit the web over the weekend.  Takedown notices are flying, removing copies of the document on DropBox, Scribd, and more.

Inhed.cz, a Czech tech news site also received a notice.  Microsoft's lawyers write:

Microsoft has received information that the domain listed above, which appears to be on servers under your control, is offering unlicensed copies of, or is engaged in other unauthorized activities relating to copyrighted works published by Microsoft.

1. Identification of copyrighted works:

Copyrighted work(s):

Copyright owner: ?
Microsoft Corporation

2. Copyright infringing material or activity found at the following location(s):

Google Inc. (GOOG) claims Microsoft is one of the most legally active companies in terms of takedown notices, requesting that 448,236 URLs be killed this month alone.  Some of those are due to its efforts to stomp out piracy and botnet hosting.  But others come from more questionable applications, such as trying to silence leaks.

The leaked Xbox 720 slides describe Kinect 2 and the "Fortaleza project" a Google-glasses like effort that could bring augmented reality to the Xbox 720 as early as 2014.  Here are a few of the verboeten slides:

why questionable?

Wby is it questionable to try to stop leaks or have leaks taken down? I am sure the 720 is still in the early phases, and early leaked data can be damaging if it is later changed or it could give the opposition an edge on what they are planning to do to compete.

Questonable would be if MS had posted it themselves, then went around with takedown notices to anyone else that was also posting it. If someone (probably a 3rd party in this case) leaks NDA information, I see nothing wrong with MS or any company taking action there.

If you've read the documents the Xbox 720 stuff is pretty ho-hum.

It's just a small part of a document that outlines the overall Microsoft consumer strategy for the next several years.

It's a really bad f'n leak. bad.
