Acer is ready to get official with the Iconia Tab A700, which was previously shown at CES 2012. The tablet has a 10-inch screen, an NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
 
One of the more interesting features of the tablet is that the 10-inch screen has full HD resolution of 1920 x 1200. Acer promises that the battery is good for 10.5 hours of video playback and that the tablet should will high-quality sound with Dolby Mobile 3 and support for 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound via HDMI out.

 
"Consumers have embraced their tablets as a mobile hub for their daily lives, and the full HD display on the Acer A700 will give customers a fresh new perspective on the apps, games and digital media they enjoy," said Paul Tayar, director of product marketing for connected devices, Acer America. "Customers looking for a no-compromise tablet will get the features and performance they want in the new Acer A700."
 
The Iconia Tab A700 also has expandable storage thanks to a microSD card slot and it also has a micro-USB port. As of today, the tablet is up for pre-order in the United States and Canada with a 32 GB version of the tablet selling for $449.99.

Itunes alone is enough for me not to want an iPad. It may be meaningless to you but I like just plugging in my Kindle Fire to my computer and transferring whatever without going through iCloud. Also, I like having a MicroSD slot and HDMI out. Things that the iPad doesn't (and will never) have. And it still costs less than the iPad and does 99% of what iPad does. Don't get me wrong, the iPad is a nice device but it's not the be all end all of tablets.

ditto! The biggest things I have against iPad are, in no particular order:
1) no usb
2) no hdmi (can convert the tablet as a HTPC to play movies off of network over hdmi)
3) iTunes
4) no microSD/SD
5) expensive - $450 vs $599 for 32GB. Also to me this is a toy to make certain aspects of computing life portable and so top-quality parts are just an added bonus, not a necessity. Hence price takes precedence over quality, at least not to the point where the quality if pathetic.

Well said, I was logging in to chime in but you said it for me. iPads are great devices but it's lacking things that I'd like to have. Just the lack of expandable memory is a dealbreaker for me. For people that don't miss those features, get an iPad. The rest will keep looking.

iTunes is a pig on Windows but the great thing about it and iCloud is that you NEVER have to open or even run iTunes to use or sync your iPad. iCloud syncs everything for you including streaming music to any iDevice or computer with iTunes. iTunes match is $25 a year but it converts any music you put on iTunes (legally obtained or otherwise) into an iTunes purchased and backed up song. I don't even have my music stored on my iPad, I just connect it to iCloud and stream it without using up my internal storage.

Android has great syncing across platforms and devices but Google Music leaves a TON to be desired. I was part of the beta and it rejected nearly 20% of the music I uploaded and I had major issues getting my Droid X to recognize the account and display the music.

I've never actually used the micro-SD card slot on my Droid X for anything except to take pictures... and the only reason I do that is because the phone doesn't allow me to take pictures to the internal storage (don't know why.) HDMI out is what I miss the most. It's so freaking useful, even on a phone. Apple wants you to use Apple TV. F that.

Because if you wipe your phone (factory reset), it completely erases all data from the internal storage, but your pics and other data are safe on the SD card.

If you get a new phone, just transfer the card to the new phone and you're all set.

There are some great benefits to iCloud, but not in areas with no service when you MUST have something. That's not a knock, just reality to all cloud based computing.

And I do agree that Google Music needs improvements. I've never had a single issue with it other than it's ridiculously dumbed down features. I want some more control over the music itself. But as for streaming music, never once a problem over 8 Android devices.

That makes sense but it is still annoying. At least give me the option. I gave my fiance my 16GB microSD when she went on a trip and I never imagined that I wouldn't be able to take pictures without it. I saw a license plate that said "CAR LOL" and I couldn't even snap a photo of it. I was bummed.

The network requirements for cloud computing are a bummer sometimes but I usually plan ahead. When I'm going on a trip I have to transfer the music and movies/tv shows I want.

Google Music wasn't a bad experience overall I was just annoyed that it rejected so much of my music. The initial setup issues were probably simply related to the fact that it was in beta.

Hate to pop the iPad bubble you got going there. But that 2048x1536 resolution uses an aspect ratio that renders the extra pixels useless for any media created after 2000. How do I know this? I had one, and anything in widescreen format produced a viewing area identical to my Galaxy Tab 8.9, a tablet smaller and much cheaper than an iPad 3. Oh and the iPad screen appeared more washed out than the GT8.9 w/ antiglare screen protector.

That said, a 10" 1080p tablet would trump an iPad in widescreen media consumption, easily.

Don't forget, you can jailbreak, upgrade, downgrade, thousands of useful apps and games. Android is just plain its ecosystem progression is slow OEM adopters are slow, IOS is updated with useful features every 6 months and has very fast adoption rates.

Finally an android tablet that has decent resolution, usb and hdmi ports, gps and decent cpu. Also some sites that have held device say that it most likely is IPS screen due to viewing angles.

$450 I am sold now if only it were available for buy - Pre-order already Out of Stock on acer.com and rather wait out couple of weeks after release before I pick it up to so how people rate it. I don't want to be in the same boat as people who bought Asus T300 and had to deal with few issues - gps to name one.

I have the A500 and have found it to be a very good tablet, especially since the ICS update finally rolled out. Good enough in fact, I'm probably going to skip this generation fo tablets. Really like that Acer pushed the resolution, and that's almost enough for me to look at dumping the A500 and picking up the A700.

I have the A510, my wife has the A500. If it's not used for gaming I can't tell the difference between the two for surfing the net, doing this and that, even with the faster processor.
1080p however would be nice, but the screen resolution is good enough on the 510 and the 500 as is.

$450 is still too expensive for a content consumption device. Modern ARM tablets would need to start at $200 for a 7" or $250 for a 10" before I can justify the cost. $450 can buy:

a) a PC that can actually do work, even if the PC is immobile
b) a PS3 or Xbox 360, with four real games
or
c) a 32" LED TV, so you can enjoy movies on a largish screen

I agree. I am surprised so many people are buying tablets at $500... But they are. Seems like a nice $250-$300 toy at 10 inches.

I am sure once these high res android 4 options flood the market and low cost sub $200 7 inchers as well prices will drop pretty fast.

When it comes down to it, some people just have the money. Most people don't so the value math presented above is correct for most people. However, there are tens of millions of people who already have all of those higher value products listed above so the tablet then becomes practical if you've also got the cash for it.

I see what you mean... But I have cash and I am a total gadget whore, believe me. I still cant see getting a tablet at $500 ever. I would say the new iPad is probably the best thing available, but I wouldn't pay more than $250-$300 max for it myself. I got an HP touchpad at $150 after the firesale from an ebay resale. It's great for the price.

I was in the same mind set as you.
So I went and got a convertible netbook/tablet, real keyboard and OS can't be beat.
The touch screen/tablet mode has it's advantages but so does a laptop form factor.
Needless to say if you are a consumer of content... A tablet is fine, if you create allot of content, you need a real keyboard and OS.

What? Not sure if serious. My A500 has surprisingly good sound just from the built in speakers, and sounds darn good when run through my AVR.

You're saying if I want to put on a TV show to watch while I cook in the kitchen I should wear headphones?
For me good speakers are very important that's why I bought a Iconia A510. The dual speakers facing down and as far apart as it can really go work fantastically. I never understood the rear facing speakers. The Note 10.1 which will be my new tablet has speakers facing forwards much like the Archos 70 tablet I use now for most of my streaming.
Speakers are important.
